Provincials served

The South Zone titles are secured and the provincial berths set.

Southern Alberta high school volleyball teams will compete across the province as the Alberta Schools Athletic Association provincials take to the court later this week.

Two of those provincial championships will take place in the south as Immanuel Christian hosts the 2A boys championship and the 3A boys provincials are in Magrath.

In the 4A South Zone playoffs, the Chinook Coyotes boys and girls teams earned the sweep at Chinook High School to advance to the 4A provincials in Edmonton.

The LCI Rams captured the 3A boys South Zone title with a 3-0 win over the Cardston Cougars in the gold medal game Saturday afternoon at Winston Churchill and will join the host Magrath Zeniths for 3A provincials this weekend. Cardston also qualifies thanks to their silver medal.

The 3A girls provincials take place in St. Paul starting Thursday with the South Zone represented by Medicine Hat Monsignor McCoy and Medicine Hat Crescent Heights.

The 1A and 2A South Zone playdowns took place at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium at Lethbridge College.

In the 2A boys division, the Vauxhall Vikings won the gold medal with a win over Taber St. Mary’s in the final. The Immanuel Christian Eagles won the bronze medal and qualify for provincials as hosts.

Vauxhall also won the 2A girls South Zone banner, defeating the Magrath Pandas in the gold medal game. Both teams qualify for provincials in Three Hills. Taber St. Mary’s took home the bronze medal.

The Bow Island Senator Gershaw Gators won the 1A boys championship and are also the provincials hosts. They will be joined by silver medallist Brant Christian Academy. The Pincher Creek St. Michael’s Dragons won the bronze medal.

Senator Gershaw will also be the site of the 1A girls provincials. Representing the South Zone will be the Foremost Forettes, who defeated Pincher Creek St. Michael’s in the championship game. The Picture Butte Sugar Queens won the bronze medal.

In the 4A provincials in Edmonton, the Coyotes boys open against Holy Trinity Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

The Coyote girls first game is also Thursday at 11:30 a.m. against Red Deer Lindsay Thurber.

In Magrath, the host Zeniths kick off the weekend against Barrhead at 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

Cardston opens the schedule Thursday at 12:30 p.m. against Sherwood Park Strathcona Christian Academy, while the Rams take on Morinville, also at 12:30 p.m.

At the 3A girls provincials in St. Paul, Medicine Hat Monsignor McCoy’s first game is Thursday at 11 a.m. against Beaverlodge. Crescent Heights opens at 12:30 p.m. against Grande Prairie Peace Wapiti Academy.

At Immanuel Christian, the 2A host Eagles open Thursday at 10:30 a.m. against Vermilion J.R. Robson.

Taber St. Mary’s first game goes at 11:30 a.m. against Calgary Christian School, while Vauxhall takes on Calgary Rundle College at 12:45 p.m.

The Pandas first game at the 2A provincials in Three Hills is 10:15 a.m. against Christ The King. Vauxhall begins the weekend at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against Plamondon Ecole Beausejours.

In Bow Island, the Gators boys start the weekend Thursday at 11:30 a.m. against Central Alberta Christian.

On the girls’ side, the Gators first game is 10:15 a.m. against St. Thomas More. Foremost opens at 12:45 p.m. against Hines Creek.
