Southern Express lose two close games

The Southern Express Midget Elite hockey team enter their Christmas break after suffering a pair of narrow losses over the weekend.

In their first game, the Express were edged 4-3 in overtime by the Calgary Fire Red. The Express trailed 2-0 after the first period, before Kendal Pierson scored twice and Payton Kruger added another for a 3-2 lead through 40 minutes.

Calgary tied the game on a five-on-three power play, then scored the winner early in overtime.

Mackenzie Leroux had two assists in the loss, while Maddison King, Brooke King and Jayel Dovichak had others. Hayley Whelen stopped 17 of 21 shots in goal.

In the Southern Express’ second game of the weekend, the Okotoks Rocky Mountain Raiders skated to a 4-2 win. Pierson and Maddison King scored for the Express, while assists went to Maddison King, Megan Draffin, Amy Craig,and Kennedy King. Devyn Amundson kicked away 19 shots.

Express return to play Jan. 5, when they face the Edmonton Pandas.
