First place in the Heritage Junior Hockey League is all but out of reach for the Coaldale Copperheads.
However, second place is still up for grabs in the Southern Division, and while the Copperheads went 1-1 in weekend play they kept themselves in the hunt.
The Copperheads downed the High River Flyers 5-1 Friday night in High River, but dropped a 4-2 decision to the Medicine Hat Cubs Saturday night at the Coaldale Sportsplex.
The loss puts Coaldale at 19-10-1 and allows the Cubs (19-7-2) to slip one point ahead of the Copperheads and into second in the south.
At 27-1-0, the Okotoks Bisons have all but wrapped up top spot in the Southern Division.
Friday night in High River, Jason Creighton came off an injury in December to score a pair of goals and James Halverson added one goal and two assists. Mason Sande and Tyler Strath added singles in the road win.
Ethan Barrows stopped 19 of 20 shots for Coaldale.
Jayden Bexte and Ty Abbott were the Copperheads goal scorers in the loss to the Cubs.
Coaldale goaltender Broc Merkl made 21 saves.
The Copperheads have three home games left in the regular season. The next one is Saturday when the team hosts the Lomond Lakers at 8:30 p.m. at the Coaldale Sportsplex.
On Sunday, the Copperheads are in Cochrane to take on the Generals at 5:30 p.m.
Fans and sponsors are reminded to use their remaining regular-season tickets, which are not valid for playoffs.
