A pair of basketball players are this week’s University of Lethbridge Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week.
Getting the nod with the men’s honour is Pronghorns fourth-year guard Colton Gibb, while Asnate Fomina won the women’s weekly award.
Gibb, a fourth-year guard from LCI, helped the Horns in a weekend split with the Regina Cougars to begin the 2020 portion of the Canada West season last weekend at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
On Friday, Gibb established a new career-high in points for a game with 32 on 13-for-19 shooting. He also posted his second double-double of the year grabbing 12 rebounds, while adding six assists, a block and a steal in the Pronghorns’ 110-92 win over Regina.
The Pronghorns were defeated 99-94 Saturday to sit at 4-8 after the weekend, but Gibb came up one rebound short of his second consecutive double-double, scoring 10 points with nine rebounds.
Making her return to action after missing the entire first semester of Canada West play due to injury, Fomina was key in the Pronghorns’ weekend split with 2019 Canada West finalist Regina Cougars.
Coming off the bench Friday night, she scored a team-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added three rebounds and three assists in the Pronghorns’ 78-70 loss to the Cougars.
In the rematch Saturday, Fomina returned to her starting position and posted 15 points, seven assists, four rebounds, a block and a steal in the 73-66 win that snapped a Horns’ five-game losing streak and improved the team to 6-6.
Fomina took over the team lead in scoring average with 18 points per game in the two games.
The Pronghorns are back in action this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Calgary Dinos beginning Thursday in Calgary.
The Pronghorns will host the Dinos Saturday at the 1st Choice Savings Centre. The womens game starts at 5 p.m. with the men to follow at 7 p.m.
