High school basketball South Zones underway

The Alberta Schools Athletic Association South Zone provincials took the court at Lethbridge College Monday.

Four games in the 1A and 2A boys and girls divisions kicked off the week of play with games running until Saturday.

In the 6 p.m. games the Nanton J.T. Foster 2A boys team downed Fort Macleod F.P. Walshe 79-55.

Leading J.T. Foster was Inigo Alava with 27 points, while Grady Blake added 21.

Gender Solatorio also hit double digits for Nanton with 17 points.

Sam Meech led Fort Macleod with 15 points. John Aaron Lopez and Tristan Luther scored 13 and 10 points, respectively.

In 1A girls play, third-ranked Coalhurst beat sixth-seeded Noble Central 46-29 as Payton Grindle put up 16 points for Coalhurst.

Lauren Mills scored 15 points for Noble Central.

The 1A boys game between Warner and Noble Central and the 2A girls game between J.T. Foster and Claresholm Willow Creek were ongoing at press time.

Play continues today at 6 p.m. with a pair of 1A girls games. Second-ranked Foremost faces the seventh seeded Picture Butte and Pincher Creek St. Michael’s, ranked fourth, takes on Bow Island Senator Gershaw.

At 7:45 p.m. the top-ranked Stirling 1A girls play eight-seeded Milk Rivers Erle Rivers and in 2A boys play, Pincher Creek Matthew Halton (eighth) plays Vulcan County Central (ninth).
