Southern Express advance

The Lethbridge Southern Express midget female hockey team is bound for the second round.

The Southern Express swept the Airdrie Lightning 2-0 in the opening round of the AFHL playoffs to advance to the second round against the Calgary Fire White.

Lethbridge won Game 1 2-1 and completed the sweep with a 4-3 win in Game 2.

In the first game Janaya Laqua and Payton Kruger scored for Lethbridge. Express goaltender Hayley Whelen stopped 13 of 14 shots.

In Game 2 the Southern Express came back from a 3-1 deficit with three third-period goals to post the 4-3 decision to take the series.

Maddison King scored twice and Britney Kambietz and Amy Craig added singles.

Devyn Amundson and Whelen split the goaltending duties.

Amundson stopped nine of 11 shots and Whelen turned aside 17 of 18.

The Southern Express are off to Calgary this weekend to take on the Fire White.

The Lethbridge midget AA Hurricanes went 1-2 at the South Central Alberta Hockey League playoffs last weekend in Edmonton.

The Hurricanes started the weekend with a 7-3 loss to the Strathmore Wheatland Chiefs Thursday.

They edged the Taber Golden Suns 2-1 Friday, but lost 6-1 later in the day to the Foothills Bisons.

In the loss to the Chiefs, Syprus Ives scored twice and Logan Kowal added the other Lethbridge goal. Luke Preddy and Koden Lazar each had two assists.

Goaltender Alex Resler stopped 14 of 18 shots and Jesse Schindel came in to make 18 saves.

Preddy scored both goals in the Hurricanes win over the Golden Suns, netting the game-winner midway through the third period.

Schindel made 27 saves in the win.

The Canes wrapped up the weekend with a loss to the Bisons as Conner Furukawa scored the lone Lethbridge goal.

Resler and Schindel split the goaltending duties. Resler made 18 saves and Schindel stopped 17.
