Forettes and Lakers among winners in 1A girls zone basketball play

The second day of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association 1A and 2A South Zone boys and girls basketball playdowns were in full swing at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium at Lethbridge College on Tuesday.

1A girls

#2 Foremost Forettes 54 vs. #7 Picture Butte Sugar Queens 34

Kamryn Yancie scored 31 points to power the second-seeded Forettes to victory. Morgan Brower added 12.

Tessa McCleod led Picture Butte with 10 points.

#4 Pincher Creek St. Michael’s Dragons 63 vs. #5 Bow Island Senator Gershaw Gators 52

Grace Zoratti scored 20 points and Mya Citrigno added 17 as the Dragons held off the Gators. Pincher Creek led 40-20 at half.

Jessica Andres scored 20 points to lead Senator Gershaw while Taryn Smith had 14 and Jessikah Babe netted 10.

#1 Stirling Lakers 88 vs. #8 Milk Rivers Erle Rivers Novas 36

Hillary Shockey scored 25 points to power the top-seeded Lakers past Milk River.

Reese Gurney and Halle Smith both added 15 points, while Courtney McKee and Talia Oviatt both netted 12.

Tansley Court scored 15 points to lead the Novas.

2A boys

#8 Pincher Creek Matthew Halton Hawks 76 vs. #9 Vulcan Country Central Hawks 55

Asher Warkentin and Ben Mitchell scored 21 and 19 points respectively as Pincher Creek topped Vulcan.

Johnny Terpstra added 11 points for the winners.

Luke Jackson dominated with a 34-point performance for County Central, while Ethan Warren added 13.

1A boys

#4 Warner Warriors 59 vs. #5 Noble Central Blades 52

In late action Monday night, Spencer Thomas led Warner with 27 points in their victory over Noble Central. Tyler Wensman added 10.

For Noble Central, Jordan Groenenboom led with 26 points. Keegan Schlamp scored 12.

2A girls

#8 Nanton J.T. Foster Raiders 62 vs. #9 Claresholm Willow Creek 30

In late play Monday night, eighth-ranked Nanton J.T. Foster Raiders beat Willow Creek Cobras on the strength of 16 points from Kalyn Glover. Juleah Lorenz added 12.

Brityn MacPherson had eight points for Willow Creek.

In games today, Kainai plays F.P. Walshe at 5 p.m. in 2A girls play, while Taber St. Mary’s faces Matthew Halton at 6:45 p.m.

In 1A boys play, Sentor Gershaw plays Picture Butte at 5 p.m., while Coaldale Christian tangles with Coalhurst at 8:30 p.m.

In 2A boys games, Taber St. Mary’s plays J.T. Foster at 6:45 p.m., while Kainai plays Kate Andrews at 8:30 p.m.
