A local product and Western Hockey League prospect has taken a step toward the 2020 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Lethbridge midget AAA Hurricanes forward Rylen Roersma was one of 35 Western Hockey League players invited to attend Hockey Canada’s virtual national under-17 development camp.
Roersma will be joined by Dr. Ben Cameron of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, who will be part of the personnel for Team Canada White.
Roersma, who will turn 16 July 25, was selected by the Brandon Wheat Kings in the first round and 16th overall in the 2019 WHL bantam draft.
In 29 games with the Hurricanes last season, Roersma had nine goals and 22 points, three of those game-winners.
The 35 WHL prospects are part of a group of 113 across Canada to challenge for a spot at the 2020 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Charlottetown and Summerside, P.E.I., in November.
The group, comprised of 12 goaltenders, 37 defencemen and 64 forwards, will be split into six teams for the week-long virtual camp, participating in a variety of sessions with a focus on player development through online education. The breakdown of WHL players includes four goaltenders, 11 defencemen and 20 forwards.
The list of WHL players invited includes 2005-born Connor Bedard, who was granted exceptional player status in March of this year and subsequently selected by the Regina Pats first overall in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.
