U18 ‘Canes remain undefeated

The Lethbridge Val Matteotti U15AAA Golden Hawks picked up their first point of the season.

The Golden Hawks skated to a 3-3 tie with the Okotoks Oilers in Alberta Elite Hockey League play Sunday afternoon at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

With the tie the Golden Hawks are 0-2-0-1.

Aidyn Law scored late in the second period to tie the game at 1-1 and Jager Gugyelka and Nathan Hawkins scored in the opening 3:17 of the third period.

Law also had an assist for a two-point afternoon.

Preston Walker made 35 saves in the tie.

The Golden Hawks and Oilers complete their series this weekend.

The teams face off Saturday in Okotoks and return to Lethbridge Sunday at noon at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

In AEHL U18AAA play, the Hurricanes downed the Calgary Flames 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Nicholas Sheran Arena to remain undefeated at 2-0-0-2.

Carter Cook opened the scoring for Lethbridge and John Szabo added the other two Canes goals.

Colby Garner had two assists and goaltender Erick Roest stopped 27 of 28 shots in the win.

Roest is now 2-0 on the season and second in the league in goals-against average at 2.00 and in save percentage at .939.

Fellow goaltender Ty Young has earned both Canes ties and is fourth in the league in GAA at 2.50. Young’s save percentage (.923) is third in the league.

The Canes head to Calgary Thursday to face the Flames in the rematch.

They wrap up their series with the Flames at home Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

In Alberta Female Hockey League play Friday night, the Lethbridge Female U18AA Southern Express earned another overtime win to improve to 2-0-0-0 this season.

Brittney Kambeitz scored in overtime as the Southern Express got past the Rocky Mountain Raiders 2-1 at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Amy Craig scored in the third period for Lethbridge to force overtime.

Piper Slezak stopped 33 of 34 shots in goal to earn the win.

In South Central Alberta Hockey League play Saturday, Team U13AA Lethbridge White and Lethbridge Red battled to a 3-3 tie.

Brent Coleman scored twice for Team Red and added an assist and Rylan Ng scored the other Red goal and chipped in with one helper.

For Team White, Hayden Iron Shirt, Owen Demone and Ryder Fomradas were the goal scorers.

Iron Shirt also had an assists for a two-point game.

Avery Leblanc made 31 saves for Team Red and Le Thai stopped 26 shots for Team White.
