Pronghorns topped in home opener

By Dale Woodard on September 21, 2021.

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s soccer team is looking for a complete game.

Kicking off a triple header of Canada West action that also included the Horns men’s soccer team and the women’s rugby team, Lethbridge was topped 4-1 by the MacEwan Griffins Saturday at the University of Lethbridge Stadium.

The loss was the first of two in an 0-2 weekend as the Pronghorns were blanked 4-0 by the Calgary Dinos Sunday afternoon in Calgary to fall to 0-4 on the season.

“We started a little slow and struggled with the wind in the first half,” said Pronghorns head coach Macky Singh. “But we settled in after about 20 minutes in the first half and we started playing a little. We got the goal in the 35th minute and we looked really good in the first half.”

The Griffins jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals from Samantha Gouveia and Raeghan McCarthy in the opening 5:45.

But the Pronghorns cut that lead in half in the 35th minute when Lucy Mundy collided with Griffins goaltender Breanna Truscott racing to a ball, allowing Kaleigh Harris to jump on the loose ball and deposit it into the yawning cage to make it 2-1 at the half.

Lethbridge couldn’t get any closer as Kaylin Hermanutz paced the Griffins to a 3-1 lead in the 59th minute and Grace Schimpf added another in extra time.

“In the second half we were kind of flat,” said Singh. “We struggled with the wind and we just struggled to control the game and control the ball.”

The Griffins outshot the Pronghorns 10-5 as Horns goaltender Erin Gill made six saves.

The Pronghorns have a bye week this weekend and return to action in a home-and-home series with the Calgary Dinos.

The first game is Oct. 2 at noon at the U of L Stadium before heading to Calgary Oct. 3.

“I think we just have to be confident and take it one game at a time and a minute at a time,” said Singh. “We play in patches and have never played 90 minutes yet. We’ve kind of played 45 minute game. So we need to try and put a string together and try to get 90 minutes. So when we’re down we have to accept that and keep our heads going. We have a few things to work on. It’s something we’ve just got to learn from.”
