The Lethbridge Hurricanes added to the older side of their roster earlier this week with the acquisition of 18-year-old forward Jack Toogood from the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Toogood was acquired by the Canes for a conditional eight round pick in 2028 on Monday.
The Devon, AB, product suited up in 65 games total games with the Oil Kings in just over two seasons where he collected nine points, and his most productive season coming last year where he skated in 56 games and had seven points.
“I was with Edmonton for awhile, so moving somewhere where you don’t really know anyone (and) don’t know the coaches, it’s a lot different and I’m excited,” said Toogood.
Toogood sees himself as a player that is good in the defensive zone and someone that wants to hit the scoresheet more.
Toogood wants to be a role model type of player with how young the roster is.
“ Like showing the young guys I’ve been in the league longer than a good percentage of the team,” said Toogood.
Toogood plans to get his feet wet with his new team by getting more comfortable with his teammates.
“It takes time but as long as I start to mingle with all of them, the on-ice will come and I will fit right in,” said Toogood.
Toogood talked about the biggest thing he has learned with being the league so far.
“It’s a lot bigger and a lot faster than minor hockey and you meet a lot of great people,” said Toogood.
Toogood played in the Northern Alberta Xtreme Prep program from 2021-2024 at the U15, U17 and U18 levels and his best year being at the U17 level where he had 37 points in 30 regular season games in the 2022-2023 season.
“He’s played in the league and he comes from a really good program in Edmonton that does things the right way ,” said Ryan Aasman, Canes head coach.
“I’m happy that Jack’s going to come in and get a fresh look and hopefully make the most of that and give us something. I think he’s a guy that plays the game hard, and he competes and he seems very coachable and well-liked.”
Forward Shane Smith sees Toogood as a player who can be in every situation and is someone they are excited to have.
Toogood did not record a point in his Canes debut on Tuesday night and did not dress in Friday’s game against Portland.
Toogood will wear No. 26 with Lethbridge.
