The Lethbridge Hurricanes fell to 2-6 on the season after being thumped 9-4 by the Portland Winterhawks on Friday night at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
“In a 60-minute effort, with the penalty kill and how we battled in front of our starting goalie was really disappointing,” said Matt Anholt, Canes head coach.
Anholt was asked about how the Canes young defencemen handled Portland’s north-south style of game.
“We gave up way too many odd man rushes in front of them and that really hurt our back end,” said Anholt.
“I think our forwards really screwed our ‘D’ (defencemen) over a lot to be honest which is too bad because I think they might’ve had a dozen odd-man rushes. It’s hard to take that every game because that means that you’re turning all game and it was a struggle.”
Nathan Brown and Nathan Free each scored two goals a piece to lead the Winterhawks attack, while Kayd Ruedig, Sam Spehar, Finn Spehar, Carter Sotheran and Alex Weiermair each tallied a goal each in the win.
Canes captain Logan Wormald had two goals to lead his team and Hudson Kibblewhite and Nathan Maloney added a goal apiece.
Portland outshot Lethbridge 37-25.
The Winterhawks went 4-for-6 and Lethbridge went 1-for-4 on the powerplay.
