The Government of Alberta announced on Tuesday they are encouraging Albertans to explore their electricity options and take charge of their power bill through an advertising campaign.
While most Albertan’s choose to sign competitive contracts with one of over 50 electricity providers in the province’s competitive market, but those who don’t or are first-time rate payers are automatically enrolled on the Rate of Last Resort, the default electricity rate, and are likely to pay more for their power.
Through an ad campaign, the Alberta Government is hoping to inform Albertan’s they don’t have to settle for the Rate of Last Resort.
In a news release, Nathan Neudorf, minister of Affordability and Utilities, says Albertan’s shouldn’t pay more for their power than they have to.
“Our government is taking action to ensure they have the tools they need to make informed decisions about their electricity, so more of their hard-earned dollars can be used where they’re needed most for them and their families.”
Last year, tens of thousands of households made the switch from the Rate of Last Resort to a competitive contract and the campaign aims to ensure those who are on the Rate of Last Resort know they have choices when it comes to their power bill. A better Electricity option that could save them hundreds of dollars per year.
Nagwan Al-Guneid, shadow minister for Energy and Minerals, in a press release questioned why the government can’t make the Rate of Last Resort more affordable for Albertan’s.
“Instead of running ad to warn people away from their own electricity rate, this government should focus on actually making electricity as affordable as retail to avoid confusing Albertans and ensuring all Albertans can thrive.
The current Rate of Last Resort is set at approximately 12 cents/KWh and is set every two years by a maximum of 10 per cent.
Albertans who are looking for help with their utility bills or are experiencing a dispute with their provider are encouraged to contact the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA)
