The Lethbridge Hurricanes inducted Herb Beswick, Ben Wright and Corey Lyons into the Wall of Honour ahead of their game against the Prince Albert Raiders on Friday night.
Beswick was inducted under Builders Category and was an important part of the Calgary franchise’s relocation to Lethbridge in the 1987-1988 season as a part of his role with the 1986 board of directors.
“It’s a special honour because I’ve been with the team for 37 years and there are many, many people (who have) made contributions at critical times that have been very important,” said Beswick ,during a Friday morning media scrum.
“For the committee to think that I’m worthy of this recognition is truly special and I’m honoured by it.
Beswick reflected on helping a team relocate to Lethbridge.
“When it came to us trying to establish a club at that time it was somewhat difficult,” said Beswick.
The group that initially started it, were kind of referred to as the four bums in blue jeans and their only problem with wanting to organize a team and so forth is they didn’t have any money. So as a consequence a larger group of people got brought in and it was decided that they would try to create a community team. That’s where we came up with the idea of doing a non-profit corporation where we got out and sold shares for a $100 a piece and we were very fortunate to get the support of the community at that time.”
Lyons suited up for three seasons with the Canes between 1988 and 1990, played in 145 regular season games with the club and collected 254 career points(116g-138a).
He set a career high for goals with 63 and 142 points in the 1989-1990 season and helped the Canes earn a berth in their first championship series.
“It’s a huge honour,” said Lyons.
“ It was so much fun to be here in those years I was here and I got to play with some guys I grew up with in Calgary as well and Wes Walz and Mark Greig and you just meet lifelong friends.”
Lyons was asked about what the city meant to him considering now he has made his home here after his playing career.
“Huge impact in my life,” said Lyons.
“My wife is from here. I met her when I was playing for the Hurricanes. So with the end of my professional career, we decided to move back here and we raised our family here and I coached all through minor hockey here.”:
Wright played six seasons with the Canes from 2003-2009 where he collected 135 points in 250 games and he 32 or more points in three straight seasons.
“When Pete (Anholt) called me a couple months ago, it didn’t really sink in until the last couple (of) weeks, ”said Wright.
He captained the team in his last two seasons and included leading the Canes to a WHL Championship series in 2008.
“The biggest thing that stuck out to me was probably our run in the playoffs in 2008,” said Wright.
“We ended up losing in the WHL finals to (the) Spokane Chiefs, who actually Bill Peters coached, so that was a little hard to see him, but he bugs me still a little bit.”
Wright was asked about camaraderie on that 2008 team when he played with likes of Mitch Fadden, Zach Boychuk and Carter Bancks.
“It sure makes it easy to play when you’re surrounded with great players, and great people and great coaching,” said Wright.
“Mike Dyck, Matt Kabayama (and) Jason Ruff, they taught me a lot about life. I kinda came in as a boy and left as a man.”
He ranks fifth all-time in points by a blueliner.
Wright was drafted by Columbus Blue Jackets in 2006 and played in play 26 professional games in the ECHL before attending the University of New Brunswick.
