WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump is slapping 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States, including Canadian products.
Trump signed the executive orders imposing the levies in the Oval Office, saying it’s a big deal and will make America rich again.
The new duties come one week after Trump temporarily paused plans to hit Canada and Mexico with 25 per cent across-the-board tariffs and a lower 10 per cent levy on Canadian energy.
Trump delayed those levies until at least March 4 in response to border security commitments from both countries.
The new duties harken back to similar actions taken under the first Trump administration.
Many countries brought retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. in response to Trump’s duties on aluminum and steel in 2018, and nearly a year later the United States made a carveout for Canada and Mexico.
