The LCI Clippers senior varsity girls basketball team are tearing it up through their Prairie Sky Conference season, having gone undefeated in league play at 8-0 so far and have gone another 13-0 in tournaments they played in going into this weekend.
Mishynn Miller, a Grade 12 leader on the team, sees the success coming from factors such as all the teammates being best friends, their work ethic and the ability to push one another in practice.
“Just making sure we can be the best that we can be every day and just getting that much better,” said Mishynn.
The team has an older look with 10 Grade 12s and two Grade 10s.
“So a lot of us have played with each other for a while now, so now it’s just getting in sync with each other and just using each other to our skill set,” said Mishynn.
Mishynn said knowing that every team wants to beat you, makes you want to win that much more.
“We have to bring our all to every game and can’t let up because no team will back down from us and I think we’ve done a good job at keeping that mentality this year,” said Mishynn.
Clippers head coach Darren Miller said this group is a very tight group and there’s a lot of expectations put upon them.
Darren challenged the team right from try-outs.
“I wanted them to be a really hard team to play against,” said Darren.
“The work started day one and the girls have all bought in and they have been battling every day in practice, every game. It doesn’t matter what the score is, they just continue with a game plan of working and they do what I ask.”
Darren said it’s interesting to see how confident they are.
“It’s doesn’t matter who the opponent is, it just seems like they approach it the same way, regardless of who they are and where they’re ranked,” he said.
“We don’t adjust what we do because on the defensive end, our girls have bought in and it’s hard to play against.”
Miller cautioned the work is far from being done and a lot of games are still to be played.
“I always tell the girls being ranked No. 1, it’s you’re not hunting anymore, you’re being hunted and you’re gonna get everybody’s best game,” said Darren.
