With Green Shirt Day fast approaching, Toby and Bernadine Boulet were recognized Tuesday at city hall for their continued efforts to inspire people through their son Logan’s story on organ donation, while also unveiling their campaign’s new shirt logo for 2025.
The Boulets each received a King Charles III Coronation medal awarded to them from nominations made by The Kidney Foundation of Canada for their exemplary dedication to building organ and tissue donation awareness across Canada.
Green Shirt Day, marked on April 7 every year, honours the victims and families of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash, which killed 16 people, including 21-year-old defenceman Logan Boulet.
Logan, who had previously shared his wishes to donate, saved six people with his organ and tissue donations on April 7, 2018. Over the following weeks, he also inspired nearly 150,000 Canadians to register their own donation decision, and this became known as the Logan Boulet Effect.
On Tuesday, this year’s logo for the campaign shirt was unveiled locally. It showcases a silhouette of Logan taking a slapshot inside a circle, accompanied with the words “Humboldt Strong,” April 7 and #LoganBouletEffect. Shirt sales support Green Shirt Day, the Canadian Transplant Association, and the Logan Boulet Endowment Fund.
Toby Boulet talked about this year’s logo and shared that logo designer Geoffrey Kehrig grew up in Humboldt and the Broncos were his heroes.
“After the crash, he bought a Humboldt Broncos Jersey and he wears it all the time, and when the opportunity came for him to be part of the contest, he knew exactly what he wanted,” said Toby.
He said the artist found a video of Logan scoring a goal in the playoffs during his final year and he wanted to have a picture of it.
“He found one taken by Richard Peterson, who took this iconic picture of Logan on March 31, 2018, which is one of our favourite Bronco pictures in our family,” said Toby.
He said that Geoffrey’s design is not only a tribute to Logan, but a reflection of the virtues he holds dear.
“Deriving from key words like reverence, honour, courage and compassion, he found parallels between Logan and another Canadian icon Terry Fox,” said Toby.
He said that the silhouette of Terry Fox that is often used on t-shirts for the Terry Fox run and Hockey Canada, inspired Kehrig as he began to see parallels between Logan becoming an active organ and tissue donor and the run for the cure from Terry Fox.
“He took this shot of Logan and put it as a silhouette, because it has action and energy for him, and he wanted to show that,” said Toby. “And he also wanted to create as a hockey design logo and that’s why the circle.”
He said that he has received many comments about how this logo is bringing back Logan into the Green Shirt Day campaign, as it is a picture of him and he has told this to the person who runs the contest for the Green Shirt Day shirt logo design and he is hopeful that someone else next year will find another picture of Logan to continue having him be part of the logo.
During the event Toby was joined by his wife Bernadine and their daughter Mariko Boulet-Couture, and shared some memories of Logan, as well as their gratitude for the continued support from the community seven years after the loss of their son Logan.
“We are very thankful for the support, the strength and the care we continue to receive on our journey since the Humboldt Broncos tragedy on April 6, 2018,” said Bernadine. “It’s realty hard to acknowledge the fact that almost seven years have slipped by since Logan passed. His legacy continues to strengthen as we remember his knowing grin, his massive heart and his giving nature.”
Toby added that Logan would be very humbled to know that his decision to become an organ donor have had such an impact on so many people.
“Both young and old who received transplants, those waiting for organs or tissues and of course their family and friends who journey with them,” said Toby.
Their daughter Mariko said that the values they promote within Green Shirt Day not just come from the three of them, they came from their little family unit and their boy Logan.
“When you have a loved one pass, it’s easy to just think and talk about the good they brought you, but with Logan it truly seems there is only good to look back on,” said Mariko.
Bernadine on behalf of the Boulet family, invites everyone to their annual Free Skate event at the Logan Boulet Arena from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for a visit, skate and some fun activities.
“I hope that today’s launch of Green Shirt Day 2025 will further spur conversations between family members and between friends, people will share their stories and like Logan’s will inspire new donors to register,” said Bernadine.
