The Lethbridge Hurricanes staved off elimination and forced Game 7 with a 5-1 win over the Calgary Hitmen in Game 6 on Saturday night at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
“I think we were a pretty resilient group,” said Canes forward Miguel Marques.
“I think we know what we’re capable of and we’re not ready to go home yet. I think we kind of know it’s do or die now and the effort we brought tonight was the standard that we have on ourselves.”
Canes head coach Bill Peters spoke about how the team was able to rebound after Friday’s Game 5 crushing defeat.
“We’ve gotta a very mature group, so they were able to just move on,” said Peters.
“New day and it’s an opportunity to get in the win column, that’s the way we looked at it and guys did a good job. We didn’t give up much, I thought Boogs (Jackson Unger) was real good and gave the guys lots of confidence.”
After scoreless first, the Canes got a great opportunity when the Hitmen’s Carson Birnie and Carter Yakemchuk both took minor penalties on the same play 6:52 into the second period.
Lethbridge made Calgary pay on the two-man advantage when Noah Chadwick took a behind-the-back pass from a falling Logan Wormald and his wrist shot from the slot found the back of the net 56 seconds into the first minor penalty to give the Canes a 1-0 lead.
Brayden Edwards got the other assist on Chadwick’s goal.
“(If) you don’t score there, obviously, mentally you’re gonna sag a little bit, but we gotta big goal there and built from that,” said Peters.
Brayden Yager took a nice feed from Miguel Marques from the corner and he roofed it on Anders Miller to give Lethbridge a 2-0 lead 13:45 into the second period.
Kooper Gizowski also got an assist on the Yager goal.
Chadwick notched his second of the night from Marques at the 18:37 mark of the second period to give the Canes a 3-0 lead.
Caden Price beat Miller from the slot after completing a nice passing play with Kash Andresen and Easton Daneault 20 seconds later to give Lethbridge a 4-0 lead going into the intermission.
The Hitmen got on the board 16:33 into the third when Brandon Gorzynski scored his fourth of the playoffs from Ethan Moore and Hunter Aura.
Edwards got the Canes fifth goal of the game with 2:48 to go in the game to make the score 5-1.
Luke Cozens assisted on Edwards fifth of the postseason.
The Canes outshot Calgary 26-22.
Game 7 is Wednesday night in Calgary.
