TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Yankees left-hander Max Fried has not allowed a hit through six innings against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, and New York leads 3-0.
Fried, a 31-year-old left-hander in his first season with the Yankees, walked two and faced two batters over the minimum. Three Rays have reached base on errors in a game at Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees’ spring training home.
The Yankees made two defensive gems to keep Tampa Bay hitless. In the third, Fried hustled to first base to beat speedy rookie Chandler Simpson by half a step on a grounder to Paul Goldschmidt.
Then to end the fifth, Trent Grisham robbed Jake Mangum with a diving catch in deep right-center before throwing out Danny Jansen attempting to tag up and go to second.
Fried had thrown 49 of 77 pitches for strikes, striking out two. He signed a $218 million, eight-year contract with the Yankees during the offseason.
New York has pitched 12 no-hitters, the last a perfect game by Domingo Germán at Oakland on June 28, 2023.
Tampa Bay’s Triple-A Durham Bulls no-hit the Yankees’ Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Saturday.
Grisham lined Ryan Pepiot’s third pitch of the game into the right-center bleachers, his fifth career leadoff homer. Hitting leadoff for the first time since June 4, 2023, Grisham also homered Saturday off Shane Baz.
Cody Bellinger also homered off Pepiot to lead off the sixth inning. In the third, Bellinger hit into a run-scoring forceout.
