They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but for many people it’s all they have left of their loved ones and one man has made it his mission to help preserve those memories so they don’t get destroyed.

Mitchell Hall lost his older brother to cancer almost 40 years ago. During his brother’s treatment, his family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House in Calgary, which had just opened.

Forty years later, his cousin, Jason Evanson, is the CEO of Ronald McDonald House, and Hall is honouring his brother through digitizing photographs and videotapes through his own business.

Hall began by digitizing his own brother’s work and then helping others do the same so they don’t lose those precious memories, something he describes as losing his brother again.

“My passion of my business is to help other families to avoid the loss of those priceless memories.”

Hall says he spent much of his life searching for something to fill the void of his brother’s passing and it wasn’t until COVID removed a job opportunity that he reflected on what he actually wanted out of life.

He decided to take a self-employment program through Execuserv and dove into the world of digitization.
Hall says it is an honour to help the people he serves as he gets a glimpse into their everyday life often seeing pictures, from infancy through until adulthood.

“It is just that that full body sensation knowing that I have glimpsed this important moment.”
Currently Hall delivers the digitization via a thumb drive, but he hopes to be able to expand his business to help people organize those photos the way they would like.

Having lived through the tremendous loss, Hall also wants to encourage people to preserve their family history, saying it’s not just about you, it’s about those who come after you.

“At the end of the day, our story is where we came from, it’s about the struggles and the joys of the past family members, the journeys they took to get here, the pieces you may have forgotten somewhere because of it sitting in a bin somewhere in an attic or a crawl space, however, that’s still a part of you, whether you believe it or you feel it a priority or not.”

With the advancement of technology, Hall says people are able to find long-lost family members through photos.
While his brother is no longer with him in a physical sense, Hall believes by keeping his memory alive, he can feel his brother’s presence in the crazy ride called life.

“As much as I’d love to have my brother among for this ride, I know he’s with me, I know he’s in my life in a variety of ways.”
