Gun control group urges PM Carney to ensure ‘timely delivery’ on firearm commitments

By Canadian Press on May 12, 2025.

OTTAWA — A prominent gun control group is urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to act swiftly to implement key Liberal election commitments on firearms.

In a letter to Carney, PolySeSouvient says the mandate letter for the next public safety minister should include a commitment to “timely delivery” of promised reforms, especially the buyback of banned firearms.

PolySeSouvient includes students and graduates of Montreal’s École Polytechnique, where a gunman killed 14 women in 1989.

During the recent election campaign, the influential group said Carney’s Liberals were the ones most likely to bring in additional measures to prevent firearm-related violence.

Nathalie Provost, who was shot at Polytechnique and has long worked with the group, ran successfully for the Liberals in a Quebec riding.

In its letter dated last Friday, PolySeSouvient also asks Carney to avoid a phenomenon it claims to have seen over the last decade — the watering-down of planned or adopted gun measures through neglect or ineffective regulation.

Say What . . .

The tragic Montreal’s École Polytechnique event which happened in 1989 was over 4 decades ago, yet we act like it just happened yesterday. The person had psych issues and if proper gun controls were in place it would have been avoided! Most of the gun crimes in Canada use weapons smuggled into Canada from the US primarily, or in some cases are printed on 3D printers so when you remove all the guns from law abiding citizens, you are not making it safer for Canadians. And because of threats by the US, China and terrorists, you are making it easier for them to take over our country, especially when our military has been bankrupted by previous Liberal governments, leaving us open for take over.
I do agree in better legislation, keeping guns out of the hands of those with psych issues, or if going through divorce or other stressful issues, the temporary surrender of those weapons until evaluations prove you have dealt with the issues, but disarming law abiding citizens when the world is facing world war III causes great concern to me, and I wonder who really is behind this disarmament! Is it a foreign actor manipulating people to push for this!
News flash – peace will never be found by just saying you want it or pushing governments for peace. At some point there needs to be a show of force before talks can occur for peace!
What happen 45 years in such a different time than this must never happen again, but taking arms out of the hands of law abiding citizens when there is a flow of illegal arms coming from the US won’t end gun crimes!
Canadians should be armed after they have been properly trained in the use of weapons and safe storage, transportation and respect of those weapons and kept out of the hands of people with psych issues, or radicals!
