Suzuki hits 2-run HR to cap 8-run sixth inning as Cubs beat Marlins

MIAMI (AP) — Seiya Suzuki homered, doubled and had four RBIs, Kyle Tucker also went deep and the Chicago Cubs beat the Miami Marlins 14-1 on Tuesday night.

In his second game as designated hitter this season, Tucker also had two singles and walked. Justin Turner singled twice and doubled, while Matt Shaw doubled and singled for the Cubs, who matched a season-high with 21 hits.

Jameson Taillon (3-3) scattered one run and four hits over seven innings. The right-hander walked three and struck out two to snap a two-start losing streak.

Tucker’s 11th homer of the season put Chicago up 1-0 in the first, and Nick Fortes tied it for Miami with a solo shot in the third.

Suzuki’s two-run drive capped an eight-run run sixth inning against Miami relievers Calvin Faucher (2-2) and Lake Bachar that put them up 9-1. Dansby Swanson and Pete Crow-Armstrong hit consecutive RBI singles and Nico Hoerner followed with a two-run single. Turner then hit a sacrifice fly before Shaw’s RBI double made it 7-1.

Chicago padded its lead with a five-run ninth against position player Javier Sanoja. Suzuki and Michael Busch hit two-run doubles in the inning.

Miami starter Ryan Weathers allowed one run and five hits, while striking out five in five innings. It was Weathers’ second start of the season, both against the Cubs, since beginning the year on the injured list.

PIRATES 1, REDS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bailey Falter gave up four hits and had five strikeouts through seven innings and Pittsburgh ended a four-game losing streak with a win over Cincinnati.

Falter (3-3) has surrendered one run in 23 2/3 innings over his past four starts, including none in 16 2/3 in his past three.

David Bednar pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

Bryan Reynolds lined an RBI single into right to put the Pirates ahead in the sixth. Oneil Cruz walked and stole second for the second time in his first three plate appearances.

Nick Martinez (2-5), who faced two batters over the minimum through the first five innings, limited the damage in the sixth by getting Joey Bart to ground into a double play to end his night with one run allowed on four hits and two walks.

NATIONALS 5, BRAVES 3

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rookie Dylan Crews hit a tiebreaking home run in the second inning before leaving the game in the sixth as Washington beat Atlanta.

Crews, the second overall pick in the 2023 MLB amateur draft, hit a solo shot with two out in the second inning off Atlanta ace Spencer Strider that snapped a 3-all tie.

Crews walked in his second plate appearance in the fifth before being replaced in center field by Nasim Nuñez in the top of the sixth. Crews left the game due to a sore left side and lower back. He is expected to get an MRI on Wednesday.

Matt Olson hit his 10th home run for Atlanta, and Strider (0-2) completed 4 1/3 innings with 75 pitches in his second start, and first since straining his hamstring on April 16.

Keibert Ruiz doubled in Washington’s first run, Luis García Jr. followed with an RBI single and Strider yielded the third run of the first inning on a wild pitch.

Nathaniel Lowe’s seventh-inning sacrifice fly padded Washington’s lead.

Left-hander Mitchell Parker (4-3) allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings, and Cole Henry, Aaron Bummer and Jorge López bridged the gap to Kyle Finnegan, who worked a perfect ninth for his 15th save.

RED SOX 2, METS 0

BOSTON (AP) — Carlos Narváez and Rafael Devers hit homers and six relievers combined to keep the Mets scoreless Red Sox starter Walker Buehler was ejected in Boston’s win over New York.

Manager Alex Cora was also ejected when he came out of the dugout in his pitcher’s defense and took over a heated argument with umpire Mike Estabrook with one out in the top of the third.

Brennan Bernardino took over for the next 1 2/3 innings as the Red Sox improved to 2-0 in the three-game series. Garrett Whitlock (2-0) got the win as the Red Sox got back to .500 at 25-25. Ardolis Chapman pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

Boston’s bullpen crew held the Mets to four hits.

Clay Holmes had a shutout going through four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth, when Narváez drove a 1-0 sinker over the Green Monster. Two batters later, Devers hit one out to nearly the same spot for his 10th of the year.

Holmes (5-3) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five.

Buehler didn’t allow a hit in his 2 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking two.

RAYS 3, ASTROS 2

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Taylor Walls hit a game-ending sacrifice fly and Tampa Bay rallied to beat Houston.

The Rays trailed 2-0 until Jonathan Aranda’s two-run single in the eighth inning tied the score.

Christian Morel then led off the ninth with a walk against Kaleb Ort (1-1) and advanced to third on pinch-hitter Brandon Lowe’s double to left-center. After Josh Lowe popped out, Walls hit a fly ball to drive in Morel to give the Rays their 12th win in 30 games at Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home this season.

Manuel Rodriguez (1-2) pitched a scoreless ninth to get the win.

Astros left-hander Brandon Walter, making his first major league start, pitched five strong innings in his Houston debut.

Jake Meyers hit an RBI double in the second for the Astros, and Isaac Paredes had a solo homer in the third against his former team to make it 2-0.

Rays starter Zach Littell allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings. He struck out six.

YANKEES 5, RANGERS 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer, rookie Will Warren struck out a career-high 10 and New York beat Texas.

Ben Rice also went deep for the Yankees in the opener of a three-game series between the past two American League champions. Anthony Volpe blooped an RBI double after Rice drove in the first two runs.

New York (28-19) has won nine of 12 to move a season-best nine games over .500.

Texas manager Bruce Bochy was ejected by plate umpire Carlos Torres with Judge batting in the sixth inning, and the Rangers lost for the third time in four games following a six-game winning streak.

Jonah Heim’s two-run homer off Ian Hamilton with two outs in the ninth prevented a shutout. With a runner at third, Luke Weaver retired Josh Smith on a popup for his sixth save.

BLUE JAYS 3, PADRES 0

TORONTO (AP) — Anthony Santander and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered, Chris Bassitt and three relievers combined on a five-hitter and Toronto beat San Diego.

The shutout was Toronto’s first of the season. The Padres failed to score a run for the third time this season.

San Diego lost its fourth straight, matching its longest losing streak of the season. The Padres also lost four in a row from April 23-27.

Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt (4-2) allowed four hits, walked one and struck out six in six innings.

Brendon Little worked the seventh, Yariel Rodríguez pitched the eighth and Jeff Hoffman finished for his 10th save in 12 opportunities.

Padres right-hander Dylan Cease (1-3) allowed three runs and three hits in seven innings. Cease hasn’t won in eight starts, failing to record a victory since April 2 against Cleveland. He has allowed three runs or fewer in seven of those outings.

BREWERS 5, ORIOLES 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Logan Henderson recorded seven strikeouts in five shutout innings as Milwaukee beat Baltimore to hand the Orioles their eighth consecutive loss.

Brice Turang, Sal Frelick and Rhys Hoskins homered to help the Brewers win their third straight. Milwaukee’s three homers matched a season high.

Baltimore has gone 0-4 under interim manager Tony Mansolino since the Saturday firing of Brandon Hyde. Mansolino had been a third-base coach on Hyde’s staff.

Henderson (3-0) allowed two hits and two walks while becoming the first Brewers pitcher to win each of his first three career starts. The 23-year-old right-hander has struck out 23 while yielding just three runs over 16 career innings.

Milwaukee took a 3-0 lead on Turang’s solo homer to left-center in the third inning and Frelick’s two-run shot into the second deck of the right-field stands in the fourth. Both homers came off Chayce McDermott (0-1).
