The Lethbridge Football Club (LFC)men’s team are kicking into a new Alberta Major Soccer League season  this weekend feeling confident that they can continue on with the success they had last season, which included a South Division crown.

“We should have just as much success as we had  last year,” said Mark Meerkerk,” LFC head coach.

“ Although they’ve changed the divisions a little bit, as in now we play everybody twice instead of just playing in the South Division. So that’ll be a new twist but I think we should  be just as good as we were last year.”

Meerkerk sees the strength of this team coming from the group of players that have been together for a while.

“We don’t have too many weaknesses,” said Meerkerk.

“Our strength will  just be can we keep on building from what  we’ve  done in the past.”

Meerkerk talked about how important a strong start to the season will be.

“A great start is what we want to have essentially,” said Meerkerk.

“ If it doesn’t go our way in the first game or so, we’re adaptable, we know we can keep on going (and) we now we can get better,” said Meerkerk.

Danilo Morales has seen the team as excited during the preparation process.

“We’re always coming (in) 100 per cent when we’re here and all the boys are really into it right now,” said Morales.

LFC is working on keeping that momentum from last season.

“Being champions last season of our division was a huge part of that and we’re just looking to continue that (and) stay on top,” said Morales.

Morales sees the back line being their strength.

“(We are) one of the best defensive teams in the league and we’re looking to continue that,” said Morales.

Morales expects a “super competitive” AMSL this year.

“With League 1 being more prominent in Calgary now, teams are sending a lot more quality down to AMSL,” said Morales.

“I expect it to be more competitive, if not the most competitive it’s been in years.”

LFC hosts the Edmonton Scottish on Saturday and the Edmonton Drillers on Sunday with both games starting at 2 p.m. at Servus Sports Centre Outdoor Field.
