The Interfaith Food Bank welcomed members of the community to celebrate National Garden Day at their Interfaith Learning Garden while enjoying a barbecue and crafts.

As Friday marked National Garden Day, the Interfaith Food Bank opened its doors to the community for a free barbecue, a garden tour and craft opportunities.

Danielle McIntyre, executive director of IFFB told media that the event has been taking place since 2013 and it usually on the Friday before Father’s Day.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to introduce people to our garden and our upcoming programs and events that will be taking place over the summertime,” said McIntyre.

She said that along with the activities offered during the celebration, people had the opportunity to use the QR codes that were showcased by the Blackfoot plants, to learn about how they were used traditionally.

The Interfaith Learning Garden was established in 2013 to provide the community with opportunities to learn about enhancing food security by growing a garden, and to promote active and healthy lifestyles.

And since 2022 the garden also includes an Indigenous Healing Garden, where traditional plants are grown for food, medicine and ceremony.

“Our Learning Garden is intended to teach people how to grow their own food and as well as to learn where food comes from. It is a learning garden, not a community garden,” said McIntyre.

She added that volunteers take care of the garden all season long and the produce that is grown is primarily used for cooking classes and the surplus goes out to their clients.

Throughout the gardening season, community members can participate in tours, workshops and other garden related activities. For information about Interfaith Food Bank, call 403-320-8779 or visit us online at http://www.interfaithfoodbank.ca .
