Blue Jays extend win streak with 11th inning walk-off victory over Angels

TORONTO (AP) — Addison Barger hit a walk-off single in the 11th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays extended their season-best winning streak to seven by beating the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Saturday.

George Springer added a two-run home run, his fifth in five games, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits for the Blue Jays, who won their second straight in extra innings. Toronto won 4-3 in 10 innings Friday.

Barger lined the winning hit to right field off Angels right-hander Ryan Zeferjahn (5-3).

Toronto’s Braydon Fisher (3-0) pitched two shutout innings for the win.

Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer allowed two runs and five hits in four innings, the shortest of his three starts since coming off the injured list last month.

Scherzer threw 72 pitches, 46 strikes.

TWINS 6, RAYS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Brooks Lee drove in the game-ending run with a bunt single in the ninth inning as Minnesota beat Tampa Bay.

Garrett Cleavinger (0-4) walked Byron Buxton to start the ninth. Willi Castro followed with a single that moved Buxton to third.

Lee then bunted the first pitch up the first-base line. First baseman Yandy Díaz didn’t have a play on Buxton, so he let the ball go, and it rolled over the bag for a hit.

Danny Jansen singled, doubled and tripled for Tampa Bay, while Ryan Jeffers had three hits for the Twins, who walked off the Rays for the second straight day.

Jhoan Duran (5-3) pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Rays starter Taj Bradley worked out of some early trouble, then cruised through the middle innings, retiring 13 of 14 batters at one point. But he gave up a pair of singles in the sixth and the Rays went to their bullpen.

CARDINALS 8, CUBS 6

CHICAGO (AP) — Yohel Pozo pinch-hit a three-run homer to cap St. Louis’ five-run eight-inning rally, and the Cardinals came back to top Chicago, ending a four-game slide.

Pozo’s drive off Brad Keller reached Waveland Avenue to put St. Louis ahead 8-5. Alec Burleson, who finished with three hits, cracked a solo shot to start the rally.

Nolan Gorman also went deep for the Cardinals, who rebounded after Michael Busch and Carson Kelly homered for the second straight day to help Chicago build a two-run lead after seven.

Thomas Saggese, a late replacement for Nolan Arenado at third, had two hits and two RBIs.

Busch lined his 18th home run in his first at-bat, then doubled and singled. He smacked three of Chicago’s franchise-record eight home runs an 11-3 rout of the Cardinals on Friday.

DIAMONDBACKS 7, ROYALS 1

PHOENIX (AP) — Ryne Nelson retired the first 16 Kansas City batters and Arizona won to end a three-game losing streak.

Nelson (5-2), who moved into the rotation full-time when Corbin Burnes was sidelined for the season by elbow surgery, gave up four hits and one run over seven innings. The right-hander threw 86 pitches, walked none and struck out five.

Freddy Fermin’s sharp single to center with one out in the sixth ended Nelson’s perfect-game bid. Fermin scored on Bobby Witt Jr.’s two-out single.

Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suárez had RBI singles in the third off Michael Wacha (4-9), and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled in two runs in the fifth for Arizona. Gurriel also tripled in the seventh off Taylor Clarke and scored on James McCann’s double.

Wacha lasted four-plus innings, giving up four hits and four runs. He threw 97 pitches, walking four and striking out four.

PHILLIES 5, REDS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber each hit two-run homers and Edmundo Sosa added a solo shot to lift Philadelphia to a victory over Cincinnati.

Phillies starter Ranger Suárez was pulled by manager Rob Thomson after throwing just 80 pitches in five innings. He struck out six and lowered his ERA to 1.99, putting the left-hander in prime position to make his second straight All-Star team.

Suárez allowed seven earned runs in his first start of the season, and has now allowed only 11 over his last 11 starts.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said because of a recent heavy workload, Suárez entered on an 85-pitch limit. Suárez had pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts and thrown at least six innings in all but his first start of the year.

Bohm hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning off Reds starter Nick Lodolo (5-6) for a 3-1 lead and Schwarber connected on his 27th homer of the year in the eighth to make it 5-1.

RED SOX 10, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ceddanne Rafaela homered, Walker Buehler earned his first road victory since April 26, and Boston routed Washington to earn the 10,000th victory in franchise history.

Romy Gonzalez had three hits for Boston (45-45), which has won five of seven. The Red Sox are the second American League franchise to reach 10,000 victories, joining the New York Yankees.

Daylen Lile extended his hitting streak to 12 games for Washington (37-52), which is tied for a season-high 15 games under .500. The Nationals fell to 18-27 at home, the third-worst record in the majors behind Colorado and the Athletics.

Just as they did in Friday’s 11-2 victory over Washington, the Red Sox broke it open with a seven-run inning. Roman Anthony made it 3-0 in the third with an RBI single, and four batters later Jarren Duran hit a two-run triple.

Nationals starter Mitchell Parker (5-9) misplayed Abraham Toro’s grounder to allow Duran to score, and Rafaela hit the next pitch into the seats in left field to make it 8-0. Gonzalez tacked on a two-out RBI single to finish the outburst.

MARLINS 4, BREWERS 2

MIAMI (AP) — Rookie Agustín Ramírez hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth inning and Miami beat Milwaukee.

Kyle Stowers homered for Miami, Ronny Henríquez (5-1) pitched a perfect eighth and Lake Bachar retired the side on eight pitches in the ninth for his first save. The Marlins have won 10 of 12.

Milwaukee reliever Jared Koenig entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth and fanned Connor Norby. He then got Otto López to hit into a force play at home before Ramírez hit a two-strike line drive to left. Ramírez has 37 RBIs, which leads NL rookies.

Dane Myers and Javier Sanoja hit singles against Brewers reliever Nick Mears (1-2) to start the eighth. Xavier Edwards then reached on a single when his bunt rolled fair inside the third-base line.

The Brewers tied it at 2-all on Isaac Collins’ run-scoring single in the fourth.

Rhys Hoskins hit an RBI triple in the second to put Milwaukee ahead before Stowers’ solo homer and Liam Hicks’ run-scoring double in the bottom half gave Miami the lead.

METS 12, YANKEES 6

NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso homered twice and drove in five runs, Brandon Nimmo hit his second grand slam in four days and the New York Mets battered the reeling New York Yankees.

Carlos Rodón (9-6) was roughed up as the Yankees equaled a season high with their sixth consecutive defeat. They also dropped six straight June 13-18, marking the first time since 2000 they’ve endured two six-game losing streaks in one year.

The Mets have won four in a row following a 3-14 slide, improving the best home record in the majors to 33-13. They’ll go for a three-game sweep in the second Subway Series of the season Sunday at Citi Field.

Francisco Lindor scored four times and Frankie Montas (1-1) allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings to beat his former team. It was his first win in three starts with the Mets after coming back from a right lat strain.

ORIOLES 9, BRAVES 6, 10 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) — Ramón Laureano’s double in the 10th inning gave Baltimore the lead and the Orioles hit three home runs in win over Atlanta.

Laureano’s double down the third-base line off Rafael Montero (0-1) drove in Jordan Westburg from third base. Jacob Stallings added a two-run double in the inning.

Félix Bautista (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth for Baltimore, which has won the first two games of the three-game series. Yennier Cano got the last three outs for his first save.

Braves left-hander Aaron Bummer recorded strikeouts on his first five outs before fading quickly in the third. Tyler O’Neill homered to lead off the inning. Bummer walked Cedric Mullins on four pitches and one out later gave up Westburg’s two-run homer.

Colton Cowser also had a two-run homer for Baltimore in the fourth.

TIGERS 1, GUARDIANS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) — Casey Mize threw seven innings of four-hit ball, Spencer Torkelson homered and Detroit dealt Cleveland its ninth straight loss.

It is the fifth time during the Guardians’ skid they have not scored a run. It was the 11th time this season they have been shut out, tied with Pittsburgh for most in the majors.

It is the third time Mize (9-2) has gone seven innings in 15 starts this season. The right-hander walked two and struck out four as he won for the third time in his last four starts. He threw 102 pitches, only the fourth time in five big league seasons he has reached the century mark.

Tommy Kahnle worked the ninth for his ninth save.

Detroit was held to two hits by four Cleveland pitchers. Torkelson’s 20th homer of the season to lead off the second inning was enough, though.

ASTROS 6, DODGERS 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yainer Diaz homered, Josh Hader got the last four outs for his major league-leading 25th save, and Houston spoiled Shohei Ohtani’s 31st birthday, beating Los Angeles.

Ohtani made his fourth mound start of the season, pitching two scoreless innings as he continues to work his way back from elbow surgery. He struck out the side in the second.

Justin Wrobleski (4-3) relieved Ohtani to start the third, and that’s when the Dodgers’ problems started. Zack Short hit a two-run double as Houston scored four times in the inning. Diaz went deep leading off the fourth, his 11th of the season.

Mookie Betts hit his 11th homer for the Dodgers in the first, and Miguel Rojas’ two-run shot in the fourth pulled LA within 5-4.

Jose Altuve led off the seventh with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly.
