Little leaguers rate local pizzerias

The Junior Canadian Little League Championship has been ongoing this week in Lethbridge and on Friday had friendly competition off the baseball field to promote local business.

Lethbridge’s Best Pizza contest was happening at Spitz Stadium near the lunch hour on Friday and participating teams had pizza slices  from strictly local pizzerias including Top Pizza, Two Guys and A Pizza Place, Red Tomato Pies, Punky’s Pizza, Luigi’s North and Bridge Pizza and then  dropped  a secret ballot in the box for their favourite pizza place.

Matt Baldock, contest organizer, wanted to promote not only Canadian but also local.

“Not as many people know Punky’s, and Red Tomato Pies and other places like that and other places that are helping contribute  today,” said Baldock.

“So, we really wanted to promote local businesses to help stimulate excitement and involvement in the local pizza scene.”

Brendan Harper, an owner of Red Tomato Pies, says it’s all wins in a friendly competition

“Fun competition’s always awesome and so anytime you can get together in a friendly atmosphere like this (on a) great sunny day, it’s all wins,” said Harper.

Harper thinks the city is fortunate to have many great local pizza places.

“Every single place here today pushes out an (outstanding) product,” said Harper.

“They’re doing a great job and Lethbridge is being represented well here.”

Red Tomato Pies entered their Lumberjack pizza in the competition, which is their signature red sauce- based pizza with ham, mozzarella, bacon, Italian Sausage and syrup on top.

“As a new pizza shop, we’re just happy to be involved in the community in  anyway we can and coming out here to Spitz Stadium for the boys here playing some ball and handing out some slices is just perfect for us,” said Jody Moench, co-owner of Punky’s Pizza.

Punky’s entered their popular all-meat pizza, which is all known as the Sap Sucker, in the competition because it has a drizzle of maple syrup on it

The Lethbridge’s Best Pizza winner was  Two Guys and A  Pizza Place.
