It was thanks to the mercy rule, the Lethbridge Jr. Bulls 14U baseball team made quick work of the Calgary based Team Alberta by a score of 17-5 in five innings during Junior Canadian Little League Championship action on Friday at Spitz Stadium.
“It was a great bounce back day,” said Will Sharpe, Jr. Bulls head coach.
“We got out to an early lead, and we kept the foot on the gas, and we were able to manufacture a win.”
Sharpe agreed the team found key hits.
“Even when we were out to a lead, we just kept hitting,” said Sharpe.
“It was very key to have good at bats and to make the plays when we needed (to),” said Bulls starting pitcher Jhett Stober.
Stober has a strong performance on the mound for the Jr. Bulls as he allowed five runs on two hits, struck out three and walked four batters in 4 2/3 innings of work.
He was named Player for the Game for his team.
“(I) came off a little bit rough in the start but it evened out,” said Stober.
Stober settled in after first inning, where Sharpe thought he threw the most pitches in any inning of the game.
“After the first inning … he was cruising along, throwing lots of strikes, filling up the zone and gave us a chance to win,” said Sharpe.
Jake Baldock had two hits in two at-bats, drove in three runs and scored three runs to lead the Jr. Bulls.
The mercy rule comes into effect when a team has 10-run lead after five innings.
Team Quebec beat Team B.C. 17-1 in the earlier game on Friday.
Lethbridge sits with a 2-1 record in the tournament and will have a day off before wrapping up round-robin play on Sunday against Team Ontario at 7 p.m.
Team B.C. plays Team Alberta in earlier Sunday game at 3:30 p.m.
Quebec plays Alberta at 10 a.m. and Ontario plays B.C. at 1 p.m. today.
