Nothing beats a pancake breakfast before a long day in the sun taking in everything Whoop-Up Days has to offer, and this year there will be no shortage of flapjacks to enjoy.

Before the fair even kicks off, the Park Meadows Baptist Church will host a pancake breakfast from 9-10 a.m. on Sunday Aug. 17, then on Monday Rachael Thomas will host her breakfast at PIP International Inc. from 7:30-10 a.m.

The Interfaith Food Bank will kick things off on Tuesday morning bright and early at 7 a.m.-for those early birds or parents of kids who can’t sleep due to excitement over the parade.

Danielle MacIntyre, chief executive officer of the Interfaith Food Bank, says they offer one of the healthiest pancake breakfasts one can find during Whoop-up days including pancakes, sausage, juice and homemade baked beans.

Along with a delicious breakfast to fuel folks, there will be live entertainment, face painting and a photo booth to take pictures.

MacIntyre says while admission is by donation, no one will be turned away if they are unable to pay.

“We use the proceeds to go right back into food bank operation…for food purchases or any of our operational costs.”

She adds these events bring awareness to those wanting to make a difference in the community as well as those who need some assistance during hard times.

“It’s a great opportunity to raise awareness both for those people who are looking to support a charity like ours, but also for the community to know there is a safe, welcoming place where they can get help if they need it.”

The breakfast will take place in their community gardens, where visitors will not only be able to explore the garden, but also have the chance to learn about Blackfoot herbs.

With the parade happening at 9 a.m., MacIntyre recommends those who would like a more sensory friendly experience to come around 9.

Just down the road Canadian Tire will also be hosting a pancake breakfast at their north side location beginning at 7 a.m. until 11 a.m., with proceeds going to the Jumpstart initiative.

For those who prefer waffles over pancakes Woods Homes is hosting a waffle breakfast on Tuesday from 7:30-10:30 a.m. with proceeds going to their programing which helps at-risk youth.

On Wednesday lads who love berries and cream can enjoy a stack of pancakes with all of the fix-ins at Bridge City Chrysler from 7-11 a.m. and be entered to win a prize draw with a donation over $5.

Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre will also be hosting their toonie pancake breakfast on Wednesday beginning at 8 and running until 11 a.m.

The United Way Lethbridge and southwestern Alberta will be hosting their third annual pancake breakfast on Thursday at the Sandman Hotel, with food being presented by Denny’s and Prime Catering.

Breakfast is by donation with proceeds going to 10 different agencies throughout Lethbridge and surrounding area which focus on family literacy programs, mentoring programs, Indigenous initiatives and other programs which help the vulnerable population.

Jaci Zalesak, executive director of United Way Lethbridge and southwestern Alberta, says every dollar counts when it comes to events like this.

“What we really want to convey is no matter what kind of gift you give; it does make a significant difference in the end because all of those dollars add up.”

United Way will also be hosting a colouring contest for kids 12 and under for a chance to win a three-month family pass to the YMCA along with a swag bag which can be found online as well as in person.

Along with a pancake breakfast, a dollar from every ride from Bird Scooters will be donated to United Way.

Southland Trailers will also be hosting their 8th annual pancake breakfast on Thursday from 7-11 a.m. with musical guest Brayden King and a kids zone. All proceeds from the event will go to Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association.

On Friday, the University of Lethbridge, along with Lethbridge Polytechnic, will be hosting their third annual post-secondary breakfast at CASA from 9-11 a.m. and future and current students, alumni and friends of both institutions are invited out to the free breakfast.

Brad Donaldson, president and chief executive officer of Lethbridge Polytechnic, says it’s a great way to celebrate community and collaboration for everyone.

“Whether you’re a student, alumni or just love free breakfast, we hope to see you downtown to chat, celebrate and enjoy some post-secondary spirit.”

On Sunday Aug. 24 Maranatha Christian Reformed Church will be hosting a pancake breakfast with proceeds going to Streets Alive Mission.

A comprehensive list of all of the breakfasts will be available along with some behind-the-scenes content on the Herald’s Instagram @leth_herald.
