CP NewsAlert: Wildfire evacuation order lifted for suburb of St. John’s, N.L.

By Canadian Press on August 15, 2025.

ST. JOHN’S — People forced out of their homes by a wildfire near Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest city can now return home.

Officials say the evacuation order issued Tuesday for parts of Paradise, N.L., a suburb of St. John’s, is lifted effective immediately.

A news release says, however, that residents are still under an evacuation alert, which means they must remain prepared to leave their homes again on a moment’s notice.

The wildfire near Paddy’s Pond, roughly 15 kilometres south of downtown St. John’s, broke out Monday and encompassed about three square kilometres as of this morning.

Premier John Hogan says the fire did not expand overnight, adding that improved weather conditions could help firefighters get a handle on the blaze.

Meanwhile, the largest fire burning in the province now measures more than 90 square kilometres and destroyed a 60-student school in Western Bay, N.L., on the northwestern shore of Conception Bay.
