The set up for Whoop-Up Days has begun and a piece of local history was the first structure to be placed in the midway: the last remaining streetcar from The Lethbridge Municipal Railway Streetcars system, which connected the city from 1912 to 1947.

With the parade just a few days away to kick off Whoop-Up Days, Lethbridge and District Exhibition is getting ready to welcome thousands to its grounds.

Paul Kingsmith, director of event development with LDE, told reporters Friday morning the energy is high, and the excitement is through the roof around the grounds now that set up has begun.

“We are super excited that Whoop-Up Days is finally here, our preparations have gone so well this year, and the community feedback has been outstanding,” said Kingsmith. “Our initial numbers are showing that we are building something bigger and better than we’ve had in previous years.”

He said according to ticket sales, they are at nearly triple the number of tickets sold by this time last year. Which Kingsmith said it is a good indicator of the increased excitement for the event across the community.

“This year some of the things that we are looking forward to that are new include the expansion of Whoop-Up Days, going to a sixth day and having Whoop-Up Days wrap-up day on Sunday,” said Kingsmith.

He said having Whoop-Up Days on Sunday is something they have been missing for a long time, and they are happy to have it back, and they are excited to see how the community responds to it.

“It’s a small tear-down day that will offer the midway, the food trucks, the beer garden and the 6th Street Sweets area, with only $5 admission,” said Kingsmith.

He said this will provide an option for people to either enjoy the midway a second time for a cheaper price, or for people to enjoy the fair at a more affordable price, for those who are only interested in having the midway experience.

“Beyond that we have some other new and exciting new things going on like the Siksikaitsitapi Music Showcase, happening on Tuesday night along with the expansion of the hours to the indigenous marketplace,” said Kingsmith.

This year’s Whoop-Up Days also features the free Extreme Lumberjacks show, the revamped Marketplace, Family Fun Zone and Community Stage Area.

Whoop-Up Days kicks off with the annual parade at 9 a.m. on Aug. 19. beginning at Park Place Shopping Centre and winding its way through downtown and north Lethbridge, ending at Galbraith School.

“We’re above 100 entries and almost 1,200 people involved in the parade who are marching, and it’s amazing to see that kind of involvement from the community,” said Kingsmith.
