OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says his party will introduce a bill this fall that would make it harder for people accused of certain crimes to get bail.
Poilievre says the proposal would create a new category of major offences that includes things like sexual assault, kidnapping, human trafficking, home invasion and firearms charges.
The Conservative bill would impose a reverse onus on people accused of such crimes requiring that they prove they should be released on bail.
Premiers, police associations and the federal Tories have been calling for stricter bail laws in recent months.
Prime Minister Mark Carney says the government will introduce its own bail reform bill in the fall sitting of Parliament, which begins on Monday.
During the spring election campaign, Carney said he would make bail laws stricter for people accused of home invasion, car theft and violent and organized crime.

I am trying to be optimistic, but we have to remember that Trudeau filled the Senate with pro-Liberal policy Senators before he left office!
If they do pass it, they may first want amendments which will remove the ‘teeth’ needed to make a difference.
The other issue, as we have witnessed over the last few years is that law enforcement refuses to enforce the laws they currently have in their toolbox, and provincial governments also have not pushed prosecutors to enforce those laws as well. It isn’t all on the feds . . . some provincial governments could be doing more!
The Alberta government oversees municipal policing through legislation and standards, but municipalities are primarily responsible for providing their police services. The government can also direct the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service on priorities, such as focusing prosecution efforts on violent crime, and the Minister of Justice has some authority over police in matters of justice and law enforcement administration.
One problem the AB province has had was getting the RCMP to act on some of those concerns which the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service wanted focus on! Many are not aware of this and it has created issues in rural areas!
We need to stop electing politicians who are pushing their own agendas that will get them re-elected, and whose focus is serving the people not telling them what they want to win votes and pouring taxpayer money into those areas that will gain public support!
But when we have lawmakers, the people we elect to bring forth legislation to protect us, ignoring the people . . . ignoring the police concerns . . . ignoring the rising organize crime . . . then they need to be replaced!
We need overhauls in the judicial system, the penal system and the criminal code, but politicians in government are too busy trying to appease the voters to assure re-election, instead of making the tough decisions which protect us, helps us to prosper, and supplies all of the necessary services.
We are in trouble! We need to focus on our country, not joining globalist movements that have policies that have devastated our country and divided us!
