Athleticism, pitching are top focuses at PBA fall camp

The Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs kicked off their new season last week and early in the fall camp it looks like athleticism and pitching are being addressed.

PBA recruited 76 kids for the fall camp and head coach Todd Hubka praised fellow coaches Josh Burgmann and Ryan MacDonald for the job they did in bringing  in  the freshman class they were able to bring in.

“The athleticism that they brought in,” said Hubka.

“That’s what you look for first in a college baseball player, is how athletic they are and we gotta lot of athletes here this fall.  So, it should be a fun fight to see who can make varsity come January.”

Hubka’s focus with the players is to not overcoach them.

“You want these kids to come in with a clean head and everything like that where they’re not overthinking everything,” said Hubka.

“We can develop as we go throughout the year but a lot of times you over coach and you take the athleticism right out of the kids.”

Hubka is always looking for pitching in fall camp.

“We filled that void pretty good this year,” said Hubka.

PBA brought  30 arms into camp as the varsity team will take  between 12 to 15 pitchers while the junior varsity squad needs all the pitchers they can get to compete at this level.

“We’re real excited with the arms that we got this year,” said Hubka.

PBA is expected to have a younger look in the outfield and there are some athletic players  who are expected to step-up and fill the voids in the infield.

“Every spot’s up for grabs and we’ll see where we go when we get to  Christmas time,” said Hubka.

A fun part of the fall camp is PBA’s World Series in October.

“That’s the highlight of every fall here at PBA,” said Hubka.

“The coaching staff … take great pride in it and if you’re going to make a team, it’s probably during that time.”

A decision is still being made as to whether three or four teams will be created for the World Series, which will see about 30 games played in the month.

The rosters for both the varsity and junior varsity team get made just before Christmas break.
