Seniors from across the Green Acres Foundation’s lodges gathered at Henderson Lake’s Henderson Lake Horseshoe Picnic Shelter for the 3rd Annual Terry Fox Silver Fox fundraiser Friday. The event for senior residents to raise money for cancer research through the Terry Fox Foundation.

A Silver Fox Walk is a senior-focused fundraising event for the Terry Fox Foundation, organized by retirement communities or senior living facilities.Green Acre residents could participate in the walk and donate to the cause, following the link on the Terry Fox Foundation’s website to the Green Acres Foundation team page.

“We want to honor the legacy of original Terry Fox, but (this event) also gives our residents the opportunity to give back to the community, and that’s so important to seniors,” says Green Acres Foundation CEO Dawna Coslovi. “Some of them couldn’t come out, but they still support financially.”

For one Green Acres resident, the Silver Fox event and the annual Terry Fox Run holds an especially personal significance. Terry Fox’s uncle and namesake, Terry Fox, has been a Green Acre’s resident for nine years. “Uncle Terry” as he is known is also a two-time cancer survivor who credits his namesake nephew as the reason he’s still alive at 86 years of age.

“I think it’s wonderful that people still remember him,” said Fox. “What he did was fantastic. I’ve had cancer myself for 23 years and I’m still here. It’s because of my nephew and the people who have donated money that I’m able to talk to you.”

The Lethbridge Terry Fox Run takes place Sunday at Legacy Park on the Northside. Registration opens at 10 a.m. at the Legacy Park Picnic Shelter.

Organizer Austin Moloughney was at the Green Acres event, which he sees as a precursor to Sunday.

“We’re leading up to the 45th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run across Canada and it’s going to be fantastic,” says Moloughney. “We’ve got the community run coming Sunday starting at 10 in the morning and going right through until two in the afternoon. We’re going to have 1k, 2k and 5k routes…and it’s welcome to all people of all abilities.”

Terry Fox ran for 143 days and covered over 5,373 kilometers before his cancer returned, forcing him to stop his journey just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario. The 45th anniversary of Fox’s journey’s end was on Sept. 1. Though Fox passed away the following year, his inspiring run led to the annual Terry Fox Run, which has raised hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide for cancer research, cementing his legacy as a national hero.

Forty-five years on, the Terry Fox Run is now a massive international one-day fundraising event, with millions of participants in over 60 countries.
