ST. JOHN’S — A look at John Hogan, leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal party. Hogan hopes to win his first election as premier on Oct. 14.

Age: 47

Education: Hogan studied biochemistry at Memorial University and law at Dalhousie University.

Before politics: Hogan was called to the bar in Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador. He started his own firm in 2014.

Quote: “Not only is it an important election issue, it is the election issue. It is what we need to talk about as a province.” John Hogan, speaking to reporters in August about a sweeping energy deal between Hydro-Québec and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.
