The University of Lethbridge community stadium will be a hive of activity on Saturday.

The Pronghorns are hosting a tripleheader with the women’s soccer, men’s soccer and women’s rugby team all playing games on Saturday. Admission is free for all three contests.

Taylor Penney, the manager of community engagement and alumni relations for Pronghorn athletics, says work has been going into the day for quite some time.

“It’s definitely a team effort. There’s lots of people in athletics that contribute and a lot of people in external relations and the alumni team actually this year is helping me out with planning this. We’ve actually been planning it for four months. Obviously the main focus of the day are sporting events and then everything else that’s happening that day as well.”

The festivities kick off at 2 p.m. when the women’s soccer team takes on the University of Regina. Men’s soccer plays host to Victoria at 4:15 while the nightcap features the women’s rugby team taking on the University of Calgary Dinos at 7 p.m.

Penney says the event provides a showcase for the Pronghorns while also letting students have an activity to enjoy themselves before midterms.

“It’s common for soccer teams to play back-to-back and we just saw an opportunity to have our rugby team play at home as well this weekend. We wanted it in kind of early September as kind of a kickoff to our season and almost like a homecoming for the students and U of L alumni to come back. I think we just really saw a need for us to contribute back to the community and provide an opportunity to expose what we do and what we’re about to the community for free.”

There will be different zones set up at the stadium, each appealing to different audiences. There will be areas set up for both Pronghorn and U of L alumni as well as an area set up for kids and young families featuring a bouncy castle.

“We see a very cyclical timeline with our programming to be able to serve children and adults.” Penney explained. “Sport and Rec does all of that, and so to align our events with what we’re about and the people that we serve on a daily basis is pretty cool.”
