Pronghorns tripleheader a success

The annual University of Lethbridge Pronghorns tripleheader on Saturday at the university’s Community Sports Stadium  was an overwhelming success.

The Horns hosted both a women’s and men’s soccer games and concluded with a women’s rugby game, which accumulated the best crowds the event has seen.

“It was our most well-attended event with over 1,400 people in attendance on Saturday, which is about 100 more people than we’ve previously seen,” said Taylor Penney, manager of community engagement and alumni relations for Pronghorn athletics.

Earlier advertising was key for more people to attend.

“I also think that our teams are building great connections in the community and I think this is a result of that,” said Penney.

“People are starting to buy into the brand because of the work that our athletes are doing in the community and the work that they’re doing on the field.”

The women’s rugby  was game the most well attended.

“Which is pretty consistent for us,” said Penney.

New to the event this year was the shorter time in between games to get a better flow of people coming out, the Karp’s Corner reveal, which was in memory of former Pronghorn soccer player Marcus Karpati,  and recognizing the LCI varsity rugby provincial championship winning team

The Horns hope to build on this year’s success by continuing to spread the word.

The rugby team was the only club to win on the day as they best University of Calgary Dinos 22-19, while the men’s soccer team lost 3-1 to University of Victoria and the women lost 2-0 to  the University of Regina.

The Horn men’s soccer then lost  4-2 to UBC and the women were defeated by Regina 4-1 on Sunday.
