Indonesia’s president visiting Ottawa after talks on trade deal end

By Canadian Press on September 24, 2025.

OTTAWA — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is visiting Ottawa for a signing ceremony today, following the end of talks on a trade agreement.

The trade deal is comprehensive, meaning it opens up trade in multiple industries with the world’s fourth most populous country.

Global Affairs Canada says there is a signing ceremony planned with Subianto, whose government concluded four years of trade negotiations with Canada back in November.

Indonesia is looking to Canada for resources and for potential work on critical minerals and nuclear energy technology.

Indonesia’s population of 280 million people is younger than most, and the country has been trying to wean itself off the carbon economy as it copes with threats to its biodiversity.

Today’s visit comes just weeks before Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to visit Malaysia for a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
