OTTAWA — A member of Parliament who has been a target of Chinese foreign interference says Canada should proceed with caution as it tries to mend its trading relationship with Beijing.
NDP MP Jenny Kwan says that while the government needs to expand its trade ties, it must also protect Canada’s sovereignty and democracy.
Prime Minister Mark Carney met with the Chinese premier at the UN on Tuesday and called it a constructive discussion.
Carney’s parliamentary secretary Kody Blois was in China recently with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, who is trying to convince Beijing to drop its damaging tariffs on Canadian canola.
Blois says the government is signalling it needs to find ways to co-operate with countries “we may not agree with.”
A public inquiry into foreign interference in Canadian democratic institutions found that China is the main perpetrator of foreign meddling in this country.

I am not a supporter of the NDP, but I agree with her and would take it one step further: Stop all trade with China!
Would you continue to invite a thief into your house after then continually steal from you? Would you continue to sell your products to a person who is taking what you made and reverse engineering it so they can build it better and take all of your business?
That is China! China was to dominate the world and they have not hidden their mission to do so, with Xi Jinping openly stating it.
By trading with them, we are paying for them to build up their military to take over Canada, and the world!
China can never be trusted! Their espionage in Canada goes back decades and continued to increase. Remember the Canadian telephone company, Northern Telecom? Years ago the company went bankrupt and knock-offs of their products were been made in Asia. When that building was sold, renovations uncovered extensive Chinese surveillance equipment throughout and the demise was blamed by many on Chinese industrial espionage.
China is much worse now and we should be cutting all trade with China and finding new markets!
