After a successful inaugural event last year, the City of Lethbridge Parks and Cemeteries team is bringing back the “Run to Remember” this weekend.Â
Ashley Walker, parks community co-ordinator with the City of Lethbridge said Thursday that the idea for the Run to Remember came from brainstorming ways to get the community to think of cemeteries as not only a place to visit their loved ones, but also as a place to recreate.Â
“We decided to host the Run to Remember as a trial in 2024, with a goal of 100 participants,” said Walker. “We exceeded our goal and the feedback from the community was overwhelmingly positive.”
Last year’s inaugural run brought together 150 participants, and she said it was because of the success and the feedback from last year’s event that they decided to host it again this year on Sunday Oct. 5.Â
“The intent of the run is to showcase the cemetery as a space to walk, ride your bike, or go for a run. And also, to celebrate life, to get together as a community actively outside, and to honour those who we have lost.”
The event itself has something to offer to everyone, as participants have the option to choose between 2.5 kilometres and 5 kilometres distance to walk or run.Â
“We want to make sure we are celebrating those who we have lost, so we have a big memory board and space on the participants running bibs where they can write down who they are running for,” said Walker.Â
Before hitting the course, participants will pause for a moment of silence to offer reflection for those they carry in memory.
“The event kicks off at 10 a.m. The 2.5-kilometre participants will go first, and a few minutes later, we’ll have the five-kilometre participants,” said Walker.Â
Participants will be timed and after the race is done, there will be custom medals, with awards for the top three male and female finishers in each age category.Â
“We have post-run refreshments and snacks as well,” said Walker.Â
For safety, cemetery gates will close to vehicle traffic from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday during the event.Â
Registration closes Saturday at noon. Those interested in participating in the Run to Remember are asked to register at http://www.racepro.ca/runtoremember.
