By Canadian Press on October 4, 2025.

AHMEDABAD, India (AP) — West Indies was reduced to 66-5 in its second innings after India declared overnight in the first cricket test at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.

India closed its first innings on 448-5 and Ravindra Jadeja finished with 104 not out. West Indies had been bowled for 162 runs in its first innings on the first day, with the hosts taking a lead of 286 runs.

In the second innings, Jadeja picked up 3-30 in the morning session to leave West Indies reeling in 27 overs by lunch. India still leads by 220 runs.

Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav also picked a wicket each.

On day two, India’s innings had seen three centurions — Lokesh Rahul scored 100, Dhruv Jurel (125) notched up his maiden test hundred, and Jadeja.

On Saturday, West Indies’ opening stand lasted only 7.2 overs before Siraj struck to dismiss Tagenarine Chanderpual for eight. Nitish Reddy took a stunning catch at square leg to dismiss the opener.

Jadeja was brought into the attack early, and he dismissed John Campbell for 14 and West Indies was down to 24-2 in 10.1 overs. It shortly became 34-3 and 35-4 — Jadeja had Brandon King caught at slip for four. Then, Yadav bowled Roston Chase for one.

Yashasvi Jaiswal took a forward diving catch to dismiss Shai Hope for one.

Opener Alick Athanaze battled on for 50 deliveries to score 27 not out at lunch. Justin Greaves was unbeaten at the other end for 10 runs.

It is the first time in 15 years that India has played a home test without Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin. The trio retired over the past season — their previous appearance on home soil against New Zealand last October was a stunning 3-0 loss for India.

West Indies has not beaten India in 25 tests — home or away — dating to 2002.

The second match in the two-test series begins Oct. 10 in New Delhi.
