OTTAWA — The music industry is calling on the government to take action to address unauthorized use of music by generative AI systems.
Representatives from music industry groups are appearing before the House of Commons heritage committee today.
They say such use amounts to theft and they want copyright protection to apply.
Music Canada, which represents large music labels, says the government must recognize such unauthorized use as copyright infringement.
The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada says AI companies should be required to disclose which copyright-protected works are ingested and stored in their systems.
It says without that information, rightsholders can’t prove their works are being used and negotiate on a fair playing field.
