Lethbridge Police have charged a Calgary man with attempted murder after multiple pedestrians were struck and injured by a vehicle on Friday in the Visitlethbridge.com arena parking lot.

Staff Sgt. Ashlin Snowdon, in charge of the Criminal Investigation Section, told media Tuesday that on Oct. 10 at approximately 6:30 p.m., police and EMS responded to numerous 911 calls reporting that a vehicle had struck multiple pedestrians in the parking lot of the Visitlethbridge.com Arena along and narrowly missed two others.

The driver then fled the area prior to police arrival.

“Three pedestrians sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to hospital in stable condition,” said Snowdon.

The pedestrians were a 77-year-old female, a 77-year-old male and a 46-year-old male. Snowdon said they are recovering at this time and no longer in hospital.

LPS also responded to reports of a hit-and-run collision in the area of Mayor Magrath Drive and Scenic Drive South, where a Subaru Outback was hit.

“The driver signaled to the occupants of the Subaru Outback before ramming it and fleeing the area,” said Snowodon.

A short time later the driver and vehicle were reported at a convenience store along Bluefox Boulevard North. The driver had entered the store and attempted to purchase several items and when his card was declined, he proceeded to threaten a staff member and left with the merchandise without paying.

“Police subsequently located the vehicle along Riverbottom Road North near Softball Valley where the driver was taken into custody without incident,” said Snowdon.

Following further investigation, evidence obtained showed the subject had intentionally hit the victims with his vehicle, he was not impaired during the incident, and the victims are all unknown to him.

“There is no evidence to indicate that the attacks were against any identifiable group,” said Snowdon. “There is still an ongoing investigation, and we are trying to determine if there is any connection between the victims and the subject.”

LPS received numerous reports from citizens that evening and he is encouraging anyone that has additional information to report it to police.

“Christopher David Hegg, 47, of Calgary, is charged with a total of 14 criminal code offenses, with five counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, and one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle, uttering threats and theft under $5,000,” said Snowdon.

The attempted murder charges are the result of the driver intentionally using the vehicle with the purpose of hitting the pedestrians.

“We will lay that charge when we are comfortable that the elements of the offense have been satisfied by the evidence we’ve gathered,” said Snowdon.

He said Hegg is known to police in both Lethbridge and Calgary and even though his last known address is from Calgary, he has ties to Lethbridge.

“There is no indication that he came into Lethbridge specifically to victimize people from Lethbridge,.”

Following a Judicial Interim Release hearing, Hegg was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court today.
