The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Women’s Rugby team begin their quest for a second consecutive year with a medal at the Canada West Women’s Rugby 15s Championship tomorrow in Edmonton and will have a tough test in their semi-final match.
The third-place Horns (3-2-1) draw second place UBC (3-2) in their semi-final match-up, who they lost 86-0 to in the regular season.
U of L is facing what is a quality UBC team that has international experience on their side.
“I think possession is a big one for us ,” said Graeme Moffat, Horns head coach, on what is going to be key for the Horns.
“For us it’s gotta be about building pressure through possession and then obviously we gotta make sure that we defend well.”
Charli Heland will be a player that Moffat relies on as he feels that she has had a strong season and has won multiple Player of the Game awards and was named Canada West’s Player of the Week a week a go.
“She’s obviously been performing well,” said Moffat.
Raymond’s Elizabeth Lapage is a player that Moffat will call upon after she had a strong game as a starter last week.
“So, she’s finding a bit of form at the right time. So that’s been pleasing,” said Moffat.
The forward unit will have to play a vital role if the Horns are going to have success.
“They (have) got collectively a really big job to make sure (we) have a good platform … to launch our attack from,” said Moffat.
U of L and UBC’s match goes at 1 p.m. and the University of Alberta face University of Victoria at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
The medal matches are on Sunday.
The Horns won a Canada West bronze last year.
U of L finished their regular season with a 55-14 win over University of Calgary on Friday.
Meanwhile, the U of L men’s soccer team clinched a playoff berth after gaining a point in a 0-0 tie with the University of Saskatchewan on Friday.
