Six year past member of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union, Local 496, Calgary, passed away January 24,

LEONARD KANE HANEY
August 26, 1915 – January 31, 2014
Beloved father and pillar of his community, Leonard Kane Haney passed away quietly at the age of 98 years
in High River, Alberta. He was born near Iron Springs to a pioneer family in 1915. His father and both
grandfathers homesteaded in the area and Leonard followed their example by taking up farming, after
studying agriculture at Olds College in 1937. Haney Farms in Picture Butte, under Leonard’s steady
leadership, became one of the largest seed farms of its kind in Canada. Leonard was a national leader in
pedigreed seed development.
He and Velva Noble, a teacher, married in 1946 forming a formidable team as they raised their family of
four children. They spent many evenings together with their kids, playing old time music- mother at the
piano and father on the fiddle. Leonard ordered his first violin from the Eaton’s catalogue in 1934, and
over the years built a substantial collection of instruments, often lending fiddles to local children to
“get them started.”
Leonard was active in community life in both Picture Butte and Lethbridge throughout his lifetime. He was
a member of the Picture Butte United Church, and past president of both the Picture Butte Lion’s Club and
the Kiwanis Club of Lethbridge. He served as a trustee of the Lethbridge School Division for several
years and was a member of the Lethbridge County Council. He served on the boards of the Oldman River
Regional Planning Commission and Lethbridge Junior College. He was instrumental in the College’s
transition to the University of Lethbridge and served on both its Senate and Board of Governors.
Leonard also served as a member of the Alberta Commission on Educational Planning (Worth Commission)
representing public school trustees; the Provincial Post-Secondary Board of Education; the Provincial
Agricultural Education and the Rural Extension Advisory Committee. He was a member of the Advisory Board
on Weather Modification for Alberta and a member of the Farm Debt Review Board for Alberta.
In 1974, Leonard was elected to the board of the Canadian Seed Growers Association and in 1981 became its
national president. He also served as president of the SeCan Organization dedicated to seed distribution
and promotion and played a critical role in the improvement and development of pedigreed grain seed
nationally.
Leonard also earned many accolades throughout his life time: The Robertson Associate Award of the
Canadian Seed Growers Association (1969); life time membership of the Alberta School Trustees Association
(1970); the distinguished service award of the Council on School Administration of the Alberta Teachers
Association (1971); inducted into the Olds College Hall of Fame (1974) and the Harry Kane & J. F. Murray
Award for community service to Picture Butte (1986). He especially valued this award because it was
presented by his friends and neighbours in his community; the people who knew him best. In 1986 he was
awarded the Order of Excellence by the Province of Alberta for his contribution to the betterment of
Education in Alberta and his outstanding service to the pedigreed seed industry in Canada. In 1993 he was
named a member of the Order of Canada and in 2005 he was granted an honorary doctorate of laws by the
University of Lethbridge.
Leonard was predeceased by his wife Velva; sisters Vera, Ruth, Francis and Alice, and is survived by his
brother Howard (Georgia); sister Kathleen Peta; sons Harry (Maureen); Tom (Marsha Erb); Dick (Joyce) and
daughter Barbara (Randy Jones). He is also survived by ten grandchildren; Shannon Haney (John Lanaris);
Patrick (Sandy) Haney; Ryan (Victoria) Haney; David (Lisa) Haney; Lauren Haney (Squire Ball); Shaun
(Tricia) Haney; Kevin Haney; Kerri Lynn (Brad) Vanderberg, Tasha Zboya (Johnathan Keith) and Jordan
Zboya; and two step-grandchildren; Ben (Katrina) Jones and Levi (Erin) Jones; ten great grandchildren and
five step great-grandchildren.
The Haney family wishes to acknowledge the many kindnesses and excellent care provided to Leonard on the
2nd Floor of the High River Hospital Long Term Care Unit over the past two years. A memorial service is
planned for Saturday, February 8th at 11:00 a.m. at McKillop United Church in Lethbridge. In lieu of

MILLER
JOHN GRANT MILLER passed away on Friday, January 31st , 2014 at the age of 66. Grant was a devoted
husband to Jacalyn (née Hudson) and father of nine children. He practiced law in Innisfail, Alberta for
more than 37 years and was known by many through his work and service in the community.
Grant is the eldest child of Joyce Pauline (née Davies) and James Rex Miller of Cardston, Alberta. He was
born in his mother’s hometown of Bilston, Staffordshire,England on 28 October 1947 and came to Canada by
boat at 10 months old with his mother. The family settled in Cardston in 1954.
After serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in England, Grant
graduated first from the University of Lethbridge and then law school at the University of Alberta. In
1976 he settled in Innisfail to practice law at  the firm that soon became Miller Lehane & Wild.
Throughout his life Grant volunteered in many capacities both within the LDS Church and in the community.
In his career as a lawyer, Grant always tried to be understandable and kind with his clients. Grant also
helped those with limited resources, at times working pro bono or arranging to be paid by whatever means
his clients could afford.
He will be dearly missed by his wife Jacalyn and children David (Aimee), Cardston, AB; Janet (Darryl),
Okotoks, AB; Logan (fiancé Rachel) Kelowna, BC; Chris (girlfriend Jamie Rowen), Toronto, ON; Steven
(Andrea), Saskatoon, SK; Lisa (Dave), Edmonton, AB; Clare (boyfriend Ryan), Red Deer, AB; and Evan,
Vancouver, BC; and his fourteen grandchildren. He is also survived by his parents, Joyce and Rex, and
brothers Scott (Janice), and Craig (Kathy). He is welcomed home by his beloved daughter Angela, who
passed away in April 1978.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5698 – 55 Ave. Cres.,
Innisfail, Alberta on Saturday, February 8th, 2014 at 11:00 a.m . with luncheon to follow.

THEODORE HENRY JANZEN
OCTOBER 21, 1965 –
JANUARY 28, 2014
Our beloved son “Ted” passed away very suddenly on January 28, 2014. He is now forever with the Lord whom
he loved.
Ted was a true friend to many he came into contact with. He loved to cook and would often surprise a
neighbor or friend with some tasty cinammon buns or a home cooked meal.
Ted had a great sense of humor and sometimes had us in stitches with his impersonations. He was also an
avid reader and a keen student of the scriptures.
He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his two
children, Talen (21), Hannah (19), his ex-wife Carmen, his parents Olga & Rudy, three older brothers
David, Randy, Dan, his sisters-in-law Cheryl, Joan, Kathy plus numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Ted’s life will be held Wednesday, February 5th at 1.00pm with Pastor Jeffery Frostad
officiating. Location: Enchant Evangelical Free Church, Enchant, AB. Funeral arrangements entrusted to

Ivy ‘Dickie’ Lund
1910 – 2014
Ivy Elizabeth Lund (nee Bird), beloved wife of the late Clark Lund, passed away in Taber on Sunday,
February 2, 2014 at the age of 103 years.

Dickie is survived by her daughters Maureen (Harry) Neitz of Stettler and Marilynn (Neil) Broadhurst of
Calgary; daughter-in-law Patty Lund of Taber as well as ten grandchildren and seventeen great
grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Clark Lund, son Darwin Lund, great granddaughter Brynn Lund, two
brothers and three sisters.
Dickie was born on June 30, 1910 in Reigate, Surrey, England. She left England at age two and moved to
Vernon, British Columbia. After her teacher training, Dickie moved to Southern Alberta and taught school
in Skiff for three years. She married Clark Lund on August 9, 1934 and they lived at a ranch in Skiff. In
1944, Clark and Dickie moved to Rosemary where she taught for twenty years, retiring in 1975. Following
Clark¹s passing, Dickie moved to Taber in 1984. Writing stories and poems of her memories, embroidering,
horseback riding and singing were some of Ivy¹s favorite pastimes.
