The top 12 men’s and women’s soccer teams of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) are set to square off at Victoria Sports Park in Raymond as the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiak soccer teams are hosting the ACAC Soccer Championships.
The men’s soccer team finished fifth in their division while the women finished third at the conclusion of the regular season. Both teams will be battling it out in the quarter finals against NAIT with the women playing at 12:30 followed by the men at 3p.m. today .
Todd Caughlin, athletic director for the Kodiaks, says it’s going to be a tough competition for all of the teams this weekend.
“This conference championships I think is lining up to be a very strong one, the number one teams in the north both men and women have been competitive all year, but they’ve also had to fight for it.”
Caughlin says while it’s been a battle for all of the teams, SAIT has been a strong contender claiming the top spot in both men’s and women’s south division and expects Concordia women’s team and the Keyano men’s team to be top contenders for the title.
The tournament will be livestreamed on acactv.ca with the students in the Digital Communications and Media (DCM) program taking charge in bringing all of the action to viewers everywhere.
Caughlin says its thanks to the amazing show the DCM students put on at each championship Lethbridge Polytechnic hosts the institution has won so many bids to host championship.
“That one of the reasons why we keep putting in bids and that just shows (when) we get the bids that we’ve done a good job because if we didn’t do a good job then they wouldn’t vote for us to host, so the proof is in the pudding.”
Caughlin stresses that while the teams are on the field battling it out on the field, there’s another one behind the scenes ensuring everything runs as smoothly as it can.
“We all got to work together to make it a success and we do. People love when we host championships because it’s a fun thing to do, and so we’re hoping this one will be as well.”
Weekend and day passes can be purchased at the gates and more information can be found at http://www.gokodiaks.ca/2025_ACAC_SOC_Championships and the Herald will be posting score updates on their Instagram.
The championships run today through Sunday.
