Carney tours Korean shipyard that’s vying to build Canada’s next submarine fleet

By Canadian Press on October 30, 2025.

GEOJE — Prime Minister Mark Carney toured a South Korean shipyard today owned by a company that’s vying to build Canada’s next fleet of submarines.

Carney was joined by Defence Minister David McGuinty and Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, along with South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-Seok.

Canada has plans to buy up to 12 new submarines to replace the navy’s aging Victoria-Class subs, as part of an effort to boost the military’s capacity and presence in the Arctic.

Hanwha Ocean and Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems are the two final bidders for the multi-billion-dollar contract.

Carney already visited the German shipyard during a previous trip to Europe.

The Canadian group visited a facility where the submarines are being built and toured a submarine in port today.
