With the Alberta teachers’ strike ending on Wednesday after three weeks , it also meant that local high schools had to figure out a way to complete the Prairie Sky Conference football season after it was put on pause on Oct. 6 due to the strike.
League coaches met via Google Meet on Tuesday night and decided to resume with playoffs next week.
“Just said, ‘Hey we’re going back tomorrow (on Wednesday), what do we gotta do to get … 4A and 3A playoffs going? 5A’s really easy to work with that’s just call out to Connor Ralph in Raymond, and between myself and Connor, we work out a date that we can play, but for the 4A there’s a lot to do,” said Darren Majeran, Prairie Sky Conference football commissioner and LCI football head coach.
The process involved having to rank the 4A teams one through four and Prairie Sky got help from Football Alberta on that.
“Once that was done we had all the information we needed for ranking teams,” said Majeran.
“It was pretty much just get into the league meeting, talk about those rankings, talk about what works.”
The idea was tossed around to start playoffs this Saturday but teams felt they needed more time to prepare and settled on this upcoming Tuesday.
“We gotta great group of coaches there and everyone’s there just trying to do what’s best for kids,” said Majeran.
LCI and Raymond will face off in the 5A South Zone Championship game on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. in Raymond.
“It is a high likelihood that we’ll both be ranked in the top eight and both of us will advance at provincial playoffs,” said Majeran.
The 4A South Zone semifinals will see second ranked Chinook High School tangle with the third ranked Medicine Hat High School at 4 p.m., then followed by the number one ranked Catholic Central High School Cougars playing fourth ranked McCoy High School at 6:30 p.m. at University of Lethbridge Community Sports Stadium on Nov. 4.
The 4A semifinal winners play on Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at U of L.
The School Sport Alberta football quarterfinals are now Nov. 14-15 and the semifinals are on Nov. 21-22.
The Alberta Bowl finals are Nov. 28-29 in Edmonton.
The Prairie Sky Conference volleyball league was also on pause during the teacher’s strike and their games were cancelled this week and play will resume early next week.
Volleyball zones will be on Nov. 21-22, followed by provincials Nov. 26-29 as planned.
