The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men’s volleyball team feel they are ahead of schedule to open the season in terms of progression and the results have shown in the win column.
“Anytime you lose the number of starters that we lost in the offseason, it’s always going to be a bit of transition and a bit of the unknown,” said Greg Gibos, Kodiak men’s volleyball head coach.
“I thought there would be some more substantial growing pains … from the group. But credit to some of the older guys for being great leaders and credit to the young crew who’s here for putting in the work, it doesn’t go unnoticed.”
Gibos credits his assistant coach Jordan Teliske for the work he has done with the players in terms of their skill development and fitness.
“I think you can see that in folds that we’re physically stronger, our technique is really good right now and all-in-all that’s allowing us to be successful,” said Gibos.
Gibos has liked the team’s work ethic.
“Young guys being really hungry to get better and I think that’s such a nice place to be,” said Gibos.
The Kodiaks are off to a 3-0 start.
“For our group to play two different opponents in two different nights (over the weekend) and be as prepared and motivated as they were, we’ll be very happy at 3-0,” said Gibos.
Fifth-year player Malcolm Fisher has seen the growth in this group already going back to preseason.
“ As a young group we just keep growing and are hungry for more,” said Fisher.
Weekend sweep
The Kodiaks swept The King’s University (25-15, 25-20, 25-1) on Friday and Northwestern Polytechnic (25-14, 25-18, 25-19) on Saturday in three sets on home court.
“It shows a pretty good level of consistency and that’s really been the name of our game for our training is trying to find ways to be more consistent in our approach, more consistent in our general level and more consistent in our energy,” said Gibos.
“It was really fun for our young athletes to come in here and perform at a high level there for those matches this weekend.”
Gibos says offensively, the team was efficient.
“We were really efficient as an offensive group which I think speaks to both Dave (Kindley) and Ben (St. Pierre) for their set distribution this weekend,” said Gibos.
As for the Kodiak women, they ended their weekend by being swept by Northwestern Polytechnic on Saturday night (25-17, 30-28, 25-18) to drop to 1-3 on the season.

The Kodiak men’s basketball team are off to a 4-0 start after defeating Northwestern Polytechnic on the road 67-51 on Saturday.
All their wins have come on the road.
