The Lethbridge Hurricanes opened their six-game B.C. Division road trip with a 5-2 victory over the expansion Penticton Vees at the South Okanagan Events Centre on Wednesday night.
Luke Cozens opened the scoring in the game when he tipped in a point shot from Nathan Maloney 14:26 into the first period to give the Canes an early 1-0 lead.
Matteo Fabrizi got the other assist on Cozens 13th goal of the season.
Gavin Lesiuk gave the Canes a 2-0 lead when he tipped in a powerplay goal at the top of the crease 1:49 into the second period from Maloney and Kayden Longley.
Penticton got on the board 2:10 later on the powerplay when Brittan Alstead found the back of the net to cut the Canes lead to 2-1.
Brady Bernie and Jacob Kvasnicka assisted on Alstead’s ninth goal of the year.
Lethbridge captain Logan Wormald restored a two-goal lead for the Canes when he squeezed a wrist shot under the arm of Vees goalie Andrew Reyelts for his 10th goal of the year with 5:46 to go in the second.
The Vees got to within a goal 3:17 into the third when Nolan Stevenson scored from Kvasnicka and Ryden Evers.
Lethbridge got their third two-goal lead of the game when Fabrizi walked in from the blueline and wristed the puck passed Reyelts on the short side 5:44 into the third period.
Mykolas Skadauskas and Kade Duell assisted on Fabrizi’s first goal as a Hurricane.
Wormald would seal the victory with an empty net with 2:45 to go in the game.
Penticton outshot Lethbridge 42-19, while each team had a powerplay goal in the game.
Lethbridge continues their B.C. road swing when they take on their former players Will Sharpe, Shane Smith and the Kelowna Rockets on Friday night.
