OTTAWA — The Swedish royal family arrived in Ottawa this morning to begin a three-day state visit alongside a delegation of top government ministers and representatives from dozens of Swedish companies.
King Carl XVI Gustaf, Sweden’s longest reigning monarch, and Queen Silvia are visiting Ottawa and Montreal for their first trip to Canada since 2006.
A Canadian delegation that includes Chief Justice Richard Wagner and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand officially welcomed the royal couple to Rideau Hall today.
Wagner is standing in for Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, who is recovering from illness.
The royals will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and are set to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney on Parliament Hill this afternoon before attending a state dinner tonight.
A Global Affairs Canada news release says Canada and Sweden will reaffirm their support for Ukraine at an afternoon event today.

While Prime Minister Carney departs for the UAE!
The promotion of their Gripen fighter jet is concerning since it is not a 5th generation aircraft. Although the JAAS 39 Gripen E is a fine aircraft, it will not be a good choice in a world that now faces WW III, and enemy aircraft from China that is 6th generation and even Russia which is developing a 6th generation fighter.
If we are going to invest, why invest so much in an aircraft that will not meet the needs we are facing? Another Liberal helicopter procurement fiasco, or ‘lemon’ submarine purchase that cost enough to have bought new submarines capable of patrolling north . . . and how much have we invested into the F-35 program?
Are we once again going to end up with kit does not meet the requirements or demands of a changing world . . . one where we face significant threats?
Nothing against the Swedish people, they are good people with a good aircraft and possibly more reliable than the current US, but we must be wise in replacing our over-aged CF-18 fleet!
